I have only hypothesis to explain such an atrocity
My first hypothesis was to cut violent scenes, or at least ones who could shock. For example, in the first episode they have cut the scene when Tobiyo dies at the hospital. Ok for that as it almost made me cry although I'm not a kid anymore and I didn't event understand what they were saying as it was Japanese ( and of course I don't understand Japanese

). Moreover, although it is a key point in the serie, there is no need to show it, as seeing the dog watching Tobiyo's hat lying on the ground is enough to understand what happened.
But the part of the scenario dealing with Atlas has no more violence than the other part, so for this one I have two more hypothesis:
1. They just had timing problems. Strange as there are only small cuts in others episodes, not almost the half...
2. They thought that two parallel scenarios was too hard for children to understand. It is effectively the only episodes where there is parallelism in the scenario (to my knowledge at least).
Either of these two hypothesis are a shame at my opinion, but I see nothing else.
The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.
