Despicable Me - My summer has just stunk a little less.

Postby The Tawashi Bus Hat » 15 years ago

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that this summer has been quite dry when it comes to the movies. We may have had some jewels, like Toy Story 3, How to Train Your Dragon, and for fans of imports, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (not to mention Inception looks amazing). BUT, we have been bombarded with many a flop, like The Last Airbender, A-Team, Eclipse (oh god, I actually was forced to go see it. BARF) and the horror of a fourth Shrek movie.

Closely following the immense success of the latest Pixar success, Despicable Me is an odd player in the summer film line in that knows it isn't offering anything new, but doesn't really care. In this way, it kinda sticks out more so than others. One thing that I gotta say I loved about this film just from seeing the previews is the art style. Kinda has that Rocky and Bullwinkle sly to it, you know?

Anyway, I recently saw the film and I gotta say I was ready to not like this movie. I mean, it looks like the stereotypical bad guy takes in cute kids and eventually becomes not that bad of a guy story. In fact, that's exactly what this film is. BUT, the charm that this film brings (and humor) really fills it out into a very heart-warming picture. I really loved it. The main characters are all given personalities that really shine through the dialogue and story and the action (although sometimes sparse) is enough to kill some of the duller moments.

It's true - some of the funnier moments were spoiled in the trailer, which is something many films suffer from - but it never fails to bring a wide smile to your face. And those minions...oh my gosh, they really bring the laughs. I'm sorry - I'm 20 and I just think those things are the funniest little guys I've ever seen... Oh wow...I love those little things...

...But yeah, this is a pretty darned good movie. It's not Toy Story, but it's also not trying to be.

Really now, who hasn't ever thought of how cool it would be to be a villain? xD Totally recommend this movie to everyone.

Out of 10, I'd give it an 8.5

EDIT: I also plan on seeing The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Inception soon - will post those reviews when I do! :3

I must agree with you on commercials spoiling the funny moments. That's what almost got me from liking Astro. 0_0 But when I actually watched his movie, the butt gun joke made better sense in context.

Anyways, nice review! If I get to, I'll try to see the movie. :3

I actually didn't see the Astro Boy movie comercials, (I knew about the movie thanks to Wikipedia), so when I saw the machine guns joke in the movie, I was sorta surprised, although I had a feeling that joke would pop up.

:astro: <- Ha ha. Very funny.

:hyo: <- LOL!
You're not a joke, you fit right in!
So shake it off, and give a grin. Don't be afraid to stand your ground! Crazy, noisy BIZARRE Town!
