Well, probably because he was a bit similar to that of his 2003 personality, and that not everything about him was fan-invented.

But I'm kinda just going on assumption there.

that was the plan in the beginning becuase the first series I watch was the 03 series and i loved his character and i wanted to keep that image of him with that deep and thick baritone and that mix of Hyde and Jackel with him being as brilliant and a gentlemen but a madman and Darcy (from pride and prejustice) his pride, arrogance, and confidence,i just liked his character :p

And no, as I've said NUMEROUS times, I'm pretty sure Hoshie had hated Tenma's guts when she had left him.

I think Atom was like salt in an open wound to Umataro. As long as he was present, he was reminded that his son was dead. He could not bear the constant reminder of this fact. True, for a while he was thrilled with his robot, but this may well have been because he had created him; he had succeeded in making such a complex robot, one that was orders of magnitude better than any others. As a scientist, he could not help but be thrilled. Scara said as much: Dr. Tenma eventually would regard Atom as nothing more than an experiment.

I think Hoshie's divorcing him may have been an attempt to change his mind about the robot, though this is speculation. He obviously still loved her, else why go to her deathbed? Umataro never stopped loving Hoshie, but perhaps each felt the other would yield in regards to Atom. Husband called his wife's bluff; when confronted by divorce papers, he made no attempt to weasel out of the deal with Hamegg. Yet she stood fast; after all, she was initially resistant to the idea of loving a robot look-alike of Tobio, and he pressured her to grow fond of him. Then, after she had warmed to him, her husband becomes cold toward him.

After Hoshie's death, Umataro, to honor her memory, if for no other reason, worked in the shadows to help Atom. Likewise, in The Egyptian Conspiritors & at least one other comic adventure, Tenma hid his identity from Atom, but helped him.

so there was love for the other just in differnent forms, that is what my parents tell me. that love as many faces and love like beauty is in the eye of the beholder this can be said for Tenma and Hoshie they loved each other but in different ways

@Jeffbert: I agree with that, and a very good post at that too.

And yes, lots of things are up to speculation. I agree that Atom was like 'salt in an open wound', but I also view that since the death of Tobio, Tenma grew extremely mentally unstable, even if he didn't initially showed that. This is indicated where he seems to expect Atom to grow, even begging him for a couple of inches. His insanity apparently seemingly made him completely forget that Atom was a robot, thus incapable of growing, and Tenma had started to believe he actually was Tobio. For a time, he refused to believe that Atom was a robot. Of course, some of that did got retconned with these three chapters.

Again, it is up to speculation really, but that's how I viewed it.

Quite true, Dr. Jerk; he was unbalanced. I cannot relate to losing one so close, but I suppose that it is very traumatic. While he was absorbed in creating the robot, he may actually have been better-off than after Atom's birth. Only then did he realize his expectations would not be met.

Yes, he would have been better off without Atom being born. But again, his insanity did him in and unwilling to accept Tobio's death, had created a replacement and went as far as to give Atom seven powers that a normal kid otherwise wouldn't need.

:tenma: If I can't make him fly, he'll drop down a cliff and die again. If I don't make his eyes into spotlights, then he'll trip in the dark and die again. If I-, etc.
