but I dislike Astro as he appeared in Pluto, especially the fact that they removed most of the things that made Astro 'Astro', such as his signature red boots, his horns or even his "wittle tushie". Uran has the same problem; come to think of it, most of the characters have that problem. I don't mind a bit of character changing, it makes the plot more interesting, but when you've changed the main character LIKE THAT, whats the point!?

I feel that Urasawa didn't necessarily change Atom, but didn't develop him. Actually, we see very little of him in the manga. So we don't see his signature boots or other characteristics because he's absent most of the time. If a person read that manga without being an Atom fan, they would not understand the character or why he is important. Former knowledge is important in reading the manga I think.

As far as styles, it's a toss-up between the 1980's and the 2003 anime. I like the former because he wears clothes. In the latter he looks more lively, but it bothers me he goes everywhere in his trunks. WEAR SOME CLOTHES, darn it!

The reason why he doesn't wear clothes is because the '60s, '80s, and '03 series were all made in japan and then dubbed in english and in Japan, censorship isn't as strict as it is here in the US, so it was completely fine to have Astro in just boots and trunks.

I liked all of them, but liked the Pluto Astro the best, hence my avatar. I did miss the red boots and trunks because that's his signature outfit. He didn't even have red shoes, his shoes were blue

I don't think it's about censorship,

I think it's just that Urasawa just wanted Atom to be more realistic, and more like an 'everyday kid' for his manga. Having him unclothed would bring him too much attention, not very good for a minor character.

I was saying that the reason why Astro didn't wear any clothes in the '60s '80s and '03 series was because of the loose censorship in Japan. The Pluto manga was, like you said, trying to portray Atom/Astro as an 'everyday kid' because Ursawa was trying to be more realistic with the characters. For example, which type of hair style seems more realistic; Atom's hair from Pluto, or Astro's hair from the '03 series? Obviously it's going to be Atom from Pluto. Same with Uran from Pluto and Zoran from the '03 series.

It's not censorship or "indecency" I'm concerned about, I just think he should attempt to look like humans and follow the norm. I liked how in the 1980's version he wore clothes unless they were burned/blasted off, and then we see his traditional outfit.

Ever noticed how the main characters have some strange traits (e.g. O'Shay's nose, Tenma's bird-like) while the minor characters a bit more normal?

Yes! Red Baron looks like a cockatiel. I don't know what Dr. Honma looks like, but I'm sure he was based off of something.
