To be honest, I don't really care either way. I prefer to have his memories, but if not then it wouldn't bother me.

Like I said, the movie was not good and was below average. However saying that it "killed" the series and ruined Astro Boy is going a little far. I guess if you were a loyal Tezuka fan since the 1960 series and grew up watching Astro then I would understand. Or if you're with Tezuka productions who help made Astro, or Osamu Tezuka himself even. I wounder if he would even like the movie if he was alive to see it.

Tezuka would probably be disappointed by the movie, but he probably wouldn't hate it. I mean, in comparison to the NOW! Comics (which Tezuka hated), the movie is by far better than those.

But, I do imagine that Tezuka would be happy about the small little details, such as the cameos of himself.

Oh my god, I forgot all about those. I read those comics recently and man they took the word Americanized to a whole new level. The dialogue, characters and most importantly the art was just bad.

Good point, the movie was far better in comparison to those.

Yeah ^_____^

When you say all those things, I guess they make sense. It just would’ve been nice if they’d explained it a little better with how Metro City treated the surface. And a bigger city, *________* yeah…

Official artwork btw, so shiny

"Shirubie" wrote:The thing that annoyed me the most in the movie was that Astro had Toby's memories. In all the other incarnations, Astro was a blank slate who was learning about humanity, how to coexist with humans. In the movie, until he realises he's a robot, he thinks he's always been human, he just fits in too well. He has nothing to learn about humanity, he thinks, acts and even looks perfectly human.

All the other Astros (except in Pluto) looked robotic to some degree, they would stand out in a crowd and felt like outcasts not just because they're robots, but because they struggle to understand human society. That struggle, a defining part of Astro's character to me, is gone in the movie. Movie Astro is not my Astro, He's Toby transfered in a robot body.

I thought about that, how Astro doesn’t look all that robotic, but at the same time I like the idea that Astro doesn’t know he’s a machine at first. That aspect of how they handled it was great in the film, in the beginning you view him as this ‘thing’ living in another boy’s shadows but then when he’s abandoned by Tenma you start seeing him as his own person. But no matter how real he is, he’s still just a robot and that affects him telling anybody the truth in fear of rejection.

I think that was the message in the film, be proud of who you are. Astro apparently wasn’t if he couldn’t tell his friends he was a robot, thus couldn’t entirely be himself around them.

Oh and Astro did have Tobio’s memories in the 2003 anime too, and I have no complaints on transferring all his memories from a strand of hair. It’s is scientific that your memories are stored in DNA not just in your brain. The fact Astro had a hard time remembering everything says not every memory Toby ever had was in there as Tenma wanted.

And Astro isn’t just Toby in a robot body, if you read the novel it says Astro is different to Toby because the Blue Core affects his personality, making him a nicer kid.

"F-Man" wrote:Be careful what you wish for. Direct-to-video animation in America is always synonym with "abomination" except if it's Disney and John Lasseter has a say in it.

I wouldn’t care if it was a sequel; I wished they’d hire me us to write the plot, we could do it justice.>=3

"Dr. Jerk" wrote:Depends on how faithful the original director wanted it to be. If the film was more faithful, it would probably be a lot better.

I think it might’ve been and would’ve been much darker, I’ve seen a lot of the artwork and designs for that movie and dude it looked shiny! The robot games was housed indoors like a circus tent, a creepy giant robot lurked in the wastelands below Metro City and it was going to be in this huge plot in using Astro as a power source, while his friends climb up to save him with the help of Zog.

I never knew what to make of this scene, if it was the end and both were waving to the crowds, or if Astro so distracted waving to somebody he's completely unaware tin man's about to attack.

Now, considering that robot is Zog (and is HUGE) and both he and Astro fought as well, I think it would've been something. But, I still like the design they came up with for Astro in the final one, the film theme could've been darker though, just a little. =3

No way! I think both are very good in my eye. I can’t choose between both. But the Japanese version of the 2003 series won over the English. The same can’t be said for the 2009 film, I thought both versions sounded great. Although Atom sounded like a girl…wait, he was voiced by one o.o

I seriously recommend the Japanese version, its funny when the butt machine guns come out on that because Atom shouts when they do, it was like a ‘Ow I fell on my tush!’ kinda sound, it was funny XD.

"jeffbert" wrote:
2003 Astro had a few flashbacks and didn't know what they were. When he was reactivated he had no memories at all, didn't even know his name and had to relearn everything.

True, but in a series of cues that cause flashbacks, he eventually recovers memories that Ochanomizu had hoped to have wiped clean.
The memories he recovers are of him as a robot living with Tenma though. The only flashbacks I can recall of him being human are the cars coming to crash on him briefly in episode 1, and himself as Tobio heading for his old home and talking with his dad. I'd say those memories look a bit pre-programmed to me.
