As this book was published by Kobunsha, these were the original Atom stories as they were originally published. And here was featured "A Day to Remember" under its orignal title, "Robotto Nagashi"! Now the original title as translated in TOW website was "Robot Sink". But this was a misnomer. While "nagashi" is usually translated as "sink", the translator had failed to take into account what the story was about and that was the "Toro Nagashi". The Bon Festival. Therefore the original title of "A Day to Remember" should have been translated as "Robot Bon Festival"! You will find lots of interesting trivia (I think) like this once you learn the language. Any way that is my advice. So please keep telling us about how amazing it is to see Tezuka's "TetsuWan Atomu" in its orignal form.

Hmm; I checked Schodt's ASTRO BOY ESSAYS' appendices, & 'A' does indeed say "Robotto Nagashi"; but 'B' says OMOIDE NO HI; that is, the manga appendix & anime appendix, respectively. Yet, Schodt translates both as A DAY TO REMEMBER.

As far as my ever learning Japanese, I doubt it. I cannot even diagram an English sentence because I know so few words that describe the parts of speech. Moreover, I prefer to do what I do best, rather than attempt to learn something new. Granted, if they had an instant learn Japanese language device like STAR TREK'S TEACHER DEVICE, I suppose I might, but otherwise, not.

Hey Jeffbert, any chance you could scan us a few examples? Like, just one or two pages? I'm curious as to the color quality. I've had manga in color before and it was annoying how all the speech bubbles were yellow for some reason...

Don't hold your breath; as these volumes are thick, stiff, & heavy; I fear damaging them by putting them on my scanner. It is 1 thing to scan a tiny 220 page 7 by 4 book, but these are as stated, big. Still, I would like to scan a few pages, just to show what was omitted from the 23 volumes, but I know that moderation is not part of my lifestyle, so I had better not even start. That said, I will describe the omitted portions in my book & probably in my web pages also.

While Mr. Schodt is the undisputed authority on Tezuka and Atom, there are a few errors in his book. For ex. in that same list of anime episodes he lists the U.S. title of "The Eyes of Christ" as "The Eyes of Christ" when that episode was never dubbed so it actually has no U.S. title. It is also obvious that he merely gave the title as "A Day to Remember", a title he established merely for expediency and simplicity's sake.

As for learning Japanese, you may change your mind someday as it is not as hard as you think. It could even help you with that diagram of English you speak of. Also I feel once you can read the actual panels you can appreciate them more. I look forward to your descriptions of the differences in the originals compared to the reprints and understand completely the reservations for scanning.

:d oh: Yeah, don't bend the spine on those things! (Did that to my FFXII guide - the 100 middle pages are falling out now, lawls.) Maybe you could take a pic with a camera instead? Just for examples, you know.

O.k., I just received 3-5 & spent all day examining them; yet, I have not finished with 5. 1st, I am disappointed with the lack of continuity in some of these, which I will detail later, but I now state that what I thought were coloring books are actually 50 page manga books.

Uran's origin: in the last few panels of INVISIBLE GHOST, grateful humans present Atom with two oblong boxes (no evil laughs necessary). Not only is Uran in 1, but Cobalt (who was destroyed #18 MIDORO SWAMP) is in the other. I am fairly sure that the 50 page manga books are some of the earliest versions of the stories. There are differences between the stories in the large and small books, both contain very old advertisements, so I am sure they are reprints.

Moreover, I will go & examine the set 6 manga book, as previously, I only looked at the large books. In them, as far as I could tell, the BK & its 3 sequels are fully told. I am sure that there could not be enough of the small books to contain the entire story, even as we know it. I will scan a few pages from these, but not until SC arrives tomorrow night.

YES! it feels good to finally know where Uran came from in the manga. You probably meant Invisible Giant though, the story that was made just before the one named "Uran".

Huh, so Uran's actual origin was that she was created by grateful humans as a gift for Astro? This certainly is interesting, even though I prefer the birthday gift origin.

Yes, it would seem the proof readers for Schodt's book did a less than careful job. But then again there is the section where he lists the lyrics for the Astro Boy theme song. He lists the lyrics with the "fight friend or foe" line rather then the correct "find friend or foe" line.

Any way I hope you at least have access to a Japanese to English dictionary as it may be of use in helping you decipher your new discoveries of Tezuka as it was in the beginning.

Also may I take this time to wish you a Merry Christmas! I'm sure you will treat us to some wonderful new info re: Atom's original version in the new year.

Thanks all! I am now examining unit 6's 2nd large volume again, & comparing it to volume 19 of the DH. page 68 & 69 are mirror imaged in 133 & 134. The format is often like this, but not always. That is, there are occasional differences such as when 1 has different content than the other one, or where certain panels appear in a different sequence. It will take a while to sort it out.

In both the large & small books are ads for things no longer made. Some of those old toys are really cute or funny.

The little books all have 1 page devoted to the Atom theme song. I have so much that I am lost! Where do I start?
