Trying to identify this one book

I'm trying to identify this one Tezuka/Astro Boy-related book, and I am not sure if I have or have not found it.

Many, many, many years ago when I was probably just a young teenager at the time, I once rented one of those 'supposed' "How to Draw Manga" books from the local library. Although this one was different, as the book claimed to have been written by Tezuka and many of the examples used was Astro Boy and maybe among others. I remember it being incredibly detailed about many things, one particular one about eyelid movements. Indeed, it was an incredibly long read. The back of the book also detailed more about who Tezuka was.

...That's really all I remember about it though, and I cannot even remember what exactly the front cover or back cover looked like. Something in my mind keeps thinking that either the front or the back depicted some sort of sunset, but I'm probably wrong on that.

I've tried to do some searching on online stores and research on fan forums, and the only thing I've been able to locate was something called "How to Draw Manga Astro Boy". I've also seen that the book was referenced here when someone mentioned that it was in that book that Tezuka described what kind of ammunition Atom's butt guns takes. Judging from this, it would seem that I had found the book...

...But I was also told by someone that "How to Draw Manga Astro Boy" was done by someone else entirely, so now I'm not so sure anymore and I'd rather only attempt to find a copy of it (it's out of print now) if Tezuka was involved with it in some way.

I have a "How to draw Manga" Astro Boy edition.

Is this the one you mean?


This wasn't written by Tezuka but it does go into his styles very deeply. I like the book. I think it's worth the buy

As for trying to identify it, I searched it up on Google and it didn't come up with any real results about a "how to draw manga" by Osamu Tezuka.

Hm, you're right. It probably isn't the one by Tezuka, but it does look very detailed and does focus a lot on Atom.

Maybe I still will consider it. Thank you.

Yes! That's almost certainly what you want; I was going to post pictures when I got back from school, but I see Dragonrider took care of that for me.

It's got detailed mechanical diagrams of his powers, goes through all his past styles, emotions and outfits, and there's a short character guide at the back. The author was apparently a former employee of Mushi Productions, so it's as good as having Tezuka write it.

There's a page about how to draw and place his eyes, and a page about his searchlight eyes. Other than that, there's nothing else about eyes. ^^;

Hm. Maybe it isn't really the same book, since I remember the other book explaining more about how fast eye blinking usually is, and how it is differently timed in animation, and the pages may not have been completely white.

Eh, oh well. If this thing is by Tezuka Productions, then it's probably still worth it. Shame I won't really be able to find the other book.

Is this it? I remember reading it in a restaurant when I was fifteen, so this book may not be that old, but at the same time I only remember Melmo being there.

But the thing about eyes and frame rates...this sounds familiar, and I thought of this book right away.
