Ayako is actually quite realistic, because it was based on things that were actually happening as a result of the second war's aftermath.

@Astronomical: Apollo's Song is about a teenage boy named Shogo who gets sent to a mental institution because of his violent behaviour and automatic hatred of love. During shock therapy, Shogo meets a goddess whom informs him that he's been doomed to live for all eternity falling for and then losing a woman over and over again. He has several hallucinations of being with a woman - for example, being stranded on an island with a female photographer, or being a Nazi soldier in love with a Jewish prisoner - but his last encounter with a woman is real...

It's the first adult work by Tezuka I read, when I was about your age. The only things I can warn you of are the sad themes, occasional violence, and semi-frequent non-sexual nudity. EDIT: Lots of people have sex, implied through imagery or off screen. All of Tezuka's adult books have some incarnate of sex in them. Seeeex.

And actually, aside from a subplot about Ayako's older brother being a spy, Ayako is wholly realistic, right down to the mental condition Ayako gets through living in her circumstances.
