I didn't know it actually was short for something, I just knew that spam was just random messages that are stupid and meant to get on people's nerves.

In fact, the word "spam" in the meaning of advertising comes from the "eatable" Spam. Monty Python had made a sketch about Spam. The firm that owns Spam allowed to continue to use the word "spam" in the meaning of unwanted advertising. Not that they could have succeeding in preventing it though, they probably played smart on this one.
The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.

No, it was a spam bot advertising a mafia game. Wikipedia it if you don't know what it is. I play mafia games often, but not at places advertised by bots, of course. =P
