I have used AVG, but that was years ago. When I was downloading P2P content, I learned that BULLGUARD was good for that, though since I have ceased p2p, I have been using whatever COMCAST provided free of additional charges; it was Mac, but is now Norton. I have had no problems with Norton, except that it may be slowing my system; but that is a price I willingly pay. I backup everything I edit or create every day. Once I fill my flash drive, I burn a disc.

Maybe you should use an external hard drive for backup purposes ?

I did that untill the usb bus on my desktop started acting up (bad home made use extention cable) then I put the harddrive inside the case. my new laptop backups threw the network to that drive in the other computer.

one day I want to have a server with a raid in it on my network for mass storage and backup.
my public downloads on my home server
my website also on my home server

A possible vector of attack by pirates is to compromise a "trusted site" (such as Amazon or eBay) to upload malware on it. Of course, it doesn't happen often, and when they succeed it doesn't stay for long, but in the mean time a few hundreds or thousands people may have been attacked.

Personally I don't mind too much free trialware. Compulsory paying trialware bothers me a lot more. *looks at Windows*
