In episode #1, the history of transportation is briefly shown; many of Tezuka's actors are riding in an old train. The dates are shown for the various transportation modes; 2015 is the date shown as the actual story begins.
Since I have seen the entire B&W AB & the JM series, it is my opinion that JM could be a parody of the Mighty Atom series. Granted, as far as I know, the client wanted a show that was as close to AB as possible, but the humorous twists on the various stories as redone in JM seem like parodies to me. It would take a while to adequately make the case for this, so I will just say, it is just my opinion.
Happy birthday Jetter Mars
I did not meant the history of the setting of the series, but rather the history behind the development itself.
Since Mushi Productions had went bankrupt in the mid-1970's, many of Tezuka's characters had gone into limbo and he could not secure the rights of them, including Tetsuwan Atom. He wanted to make a color remake of it, but because of these problems, he couldn't and wouldn't be able to for some years. In the mean time he was working at Toei Animation, and having a deadline of sorts, had slightly redesigned Atom and thus Mars was created.

It was licensed and dubbed in Spanish, but there was no home release apparently.
The Italian DVD isn't that great anyway, since it basically just combined four episodes into a 'movie'.
