Looking for a "pen pal."

Postby Bakabits » 14 years ago

I recently started teaching myself Japanese and i am looking for someone who speaks Japanese to teach me and email with. It can also go the other way. i am also willing to touch base with someone who wants to learn so we could learn together. I know i am a dork for asking this. i will not post my email in this thread. i will PM the person who wants to help me learn. Again, i know i am a dork. :p

As far as I know, there are no Japanese users here, and finding one who also understands English and would be interested would be rather difficult.

There is this one user on Tezuka in English, but I am not quite so sure.

You would probably have more success with this: Are you looking for a Japanese pen pal?

I don't know what level you are currently at, but if you start nearly from nothing, I think it may be better to take a class. I used to chat and sometimes people would ask me to teach them French. But it would take as much preparation as a teacher would need to prepare a semester to do that from scratch. I have had a pen pal to improve my English and help her with my language. She was already quite advanced but it still took me a lot of time to go over her mistakes and make suggestions. And communicating will be next to impossible if both of you have very little knowledge of each other's language.

But, if you feel ready for it, have fun! I'm sure there are many Japaneses looking forward to learn English! :)

I am also teaching myself Japanese, and it can be quite difficult. As Astro Forever says, the best way is to take a class or get a tutor.

Also, have you learned a second language already? I took four years of Spanish, and that has really helped in my pursuit of learning Japanese.

I have resources I find useful, so let me know if you're interested in what I'm using and I'll post them.

we could creat a thred on here to help those members interested in learning.

we would just post back and forth in Japanese and English to practice, if we did that I would partisipate.

it would work more or less the same as emailing back and forth, but just on the public forum and more people could partisipate.

after we all are experts the info is still out in the open and can be used by other people.

I am 99% sure that there is no user here who can speak Japanese very fluently.

And talking back and forth in one language is hardly going to help. If someone ever sent me an e-mail in Japanese or some other language, I would go straight to Google Translate, which is not that very good and it still wouldn't mean that I would learn a thing out of it. This is not a very good way of learning any given language.

Oh and, it's participate. Not 'partisipate'.

But are you completely sure?

Sonicx137, if you're looking for an actual, living in Japan Japanese penpal, you might have to start by learning some Japanese, and maybe starting a blog on blog.goo.ne.jp. That's how I met my friends Ako and Miux-R.

Hence why I said '99%', not '100'. <_< Also one would need to be VERY fluent in it to teach it.

It's still not a very good way of learning a language still, in my opinion.
