Who's to say he'll be a Japanese character? Or a kid, or that he'll even be in the movie? Who's to say it'll have the same amount of super robots, or that the story will happen across multiple continents, or that it'll even happen on Earth?

You never know, they could completely change the plot if they wanted to.

When I think of who would play Atom, I would think a white kid. If you look at the manga, does Atom look even close to a Japanese kid? No he doesn't, so why make it a japanese kid just because they live in Japan? Besides, it would look kinda weird if it was a Japanese kid.

As I said earlier in the thread, it's wrong to think that Japanese anime characters like Astro look caucasian. Japanese people can have white skin too (and I hear most of them prefer whiter skin), and having big eyes DOES NOT mean they look caucasian, because even caucasians don't have eyes that big.

I'm getting a flashback of an Astro Boy manga chapter where a racist American told Astro "Aren't you a robot from Japan? Why isn't your skin more yellow than that?".

More on the subject:

And then you've also got that picture on the other page. A caucasian face could look just as scary on that picture, even scarier.

It's weird though, Atom looked caucasian, but his sister looked Japanese. (I'm trying not to be racist, btw) Look at anyone who is Japanese and then look at Atom do you see any resemblance between the two? Now do the same with a caucasian. Which one looks closer to Atom? Probably the caucasian, but I do get what you are saying, F-man.

And I agree, a Caucasian would look just as creepy if not creepier in that picture.

(If I offend anyone by this post, I apologize.)

Now, in the Pluto Manga he did look more Japanese if anything. I said before, if they keep the plot the same (which they should) then they should have a Japanese boy play him. Because if you turn it so that Atom is American and is Caucasian, it is then in a way a slap or a middle finger to the Japanese fans and original creators.

Now, I never thought of what race Astro was until Pluto. In a way I still don't. I do remember some comments from fans when the Astro Boy 09 movie was coming out that they didn't like the way his face looked and that they were trying to make him look Caucasian. I know this was not the reason (I don't think) but I can sort of understand.

I have never thought of Tezuka's Astro Boy, as a white kid nor an asain kid. Maybe this might be because of the animation, this isn't just with Astro it's with other animated characters as well. I see the characters themselves, for what they are and not their race that they are suppose to be.

When I see Astro, I just see Astro, not some Asian boy. When I look Vegeta I don't see an Asian man I just see Vegeta. (You get where this is going.) Same thing with real life people in a way.

Yeah I see what you're getting at and I'm pretty much the same way when I see anime characters. I've never actully thought of Atom/Astro's race until I saw this thread.

I have noticed this in the 03 dub. Now if he was like me..... Europe in a box...then we would be talking.... ahem....
