Hi,

Astro Vecellio was my uncle. He passed away one year ago (22 Jan 2012) at the age of 75.25.

I can confirm that Astro was his name at birth - 23 October 1936. So he preceded Astro Boy by about 16 years.

Astro was not an abbreviation for another name. That was his first name as registered at birth.

You are correct that the surname, Vecellio, is Italian. The family comes from the Dolomites in Northern Italy (close to the Austrian border).

Whoa! wait a minute - how old IS this guy? Early 60's were 50 years ago -- does that mean he's in his 70's? (quick, somebody draw grampa Astro flying around bald and with a long gray beard).

His last name looks Italian - maybe his first name is very ethnic and they shortened it to Astro? My dad's name is Angelo - most people call him "Al" - very weird, indeed!
