Are you guys ready to see my favourite singer?!

It's this guy...

(Promotional shoot, 2010)

His name is Yasuyuki Okamura, known as Okamura-chan with his female fans. It's seriously not easy for me to get attached to musicians (I had a mild Robert Palmer phase not long ago), and no one's really caught with me as much as Okamura has. He's just...a cartoon character. He's wild on stage, but in interviews it's evident that he's a really, really nice guy. (And when he was younger and had pin-ups, he had the weirdest pin-ups.)

So one day in October 2010, I wound up looking up his 1989 song Super Girl, which at the time I only knew as one of the ending themes for City Hunter. I've always had a thing for eighties music, but he was such a charming little goofball in the video that I started looking more of him up. I eventually got his album "Katei Kyoushi" a month later, and the weird thing is, certain tracks remind me of working at the A&W if I concentrate.

Evidence A: Music video for "Doonacchattendayo / Whaddya Doing": I almost crashed a funeral with this song. More on that later.

Evidence B: "Biscuit Love": Easily my favourite of the faster songs on "Katei Kyoushi".

Evidence C: "Harenchi / Shameless": This song is highly recommended! It's almost six minutes long and it's embarrassing when translated, but it's well done and quite catchy.

Evidence D: "Peach Time": I listened to this ten times in a row once. The noises at the end I must admit are really weird, but they're a trademark of Okamura's 1989-1992 period. There's samples from his earlier songs "Young Oh! Oh!", "Ijiwaru/Unkind", and "Bible".

(Date, Okamura's 1988 album. He was a very young man when this was released.)

Okamura is in his mid-forties today, and he's rather mellowed-out in comparison to his career in the eighties and nineties (which is good, since that would be weird) but now he's a big producer and his voice is pretty much the same! It's just...so...smooth. He helped produce the singers Meg and Misato Watanabe, so if you're a fan of either lady...thank him. :p

Although...last year he got out of prison and rehab following charges of amphetamine possession. There's court transcripts floating around online but they've made me cry. Basically, there's some things about Okamura-chan that I should learn from.

I'm nowhere near being an expert on Okamura, and I never want to be obsessed with a person like some people can be, but I can say that I'm confirmed to be his biggest English fan. I don't want to annoy you guys about him, but he's just so...cool. If anybody gets interested, I'd love to tell you more about him! Like the period phases, or more recommended songs...or that story about the funeral. :whistling:

So he is singing in a mix of English and Japanese? Thanks for this glimpse of the Japanese pop culture! I find some of his songs catchy, even if I can't understand anything (not that I don't already have some songs in languages I can't understand on my mp3 player).

What's that thing about the funeral? You made me so curious!

A lot of Japanese music has traces of English in it (like there'll be a kid's show with an intro that goes "LET'S FLY" in the middle of Japanese lyrics), but Okamura seems to be mildly fluent in English, so he uses it a lot more. He was a big fan of Prince when he was younger, and it's quite evident in how he's a lot more "Western".

And the funeral story...so one day I'm biking home from school, with a handlebar-mounted MP3 speaker playing Okamura's fourth album, Katei Kyoushi. Specifically, this song is playing the whole time. A passing car forces me to have to go up an alley near the school, and the alley only connects to the parking lot of a funeral chapel, which I can get through to get back to the main street. I head behind the chapel, but I start to notice there's an awful lot of cars parked there. This is when the song gets into an instrumental interlude, so there's a lot of electronic noises and shrieks coming from the speaker. And that's when I notice a stream of people in black starting to head out of the chapel...

So I turned around and went back the way I came. I know this is what would have happened otherwise:

"Don't worry, Annie. Your uncle's in a better place n--"
"DOOOONACCHA TENDAYOO! JINSEI GAN BATTENDA YOOO!"

I've ordered Okamura's latest album (well, "latest" meaning "2007", given the jail thing) and it hopefully should be arriving this week! It's got a bonus disc with some of the songs that he's produced for other artists.

I JUST GOT THE BEST NEWS EVER.

In addition to Okamura now touring with a festival this month, there's a contest being held via Twitter, the "Yasuyuki Okamura T-Shirt Design Contest". The design must only be for the front of the shirt and be one colour, and there will be five winners who get 30,000 yen (this is maybe $400). I'm definitely entering this! I've already got two good designs, and start working on them tonight.

I actually made a Twitter account tonight; I'd had no prior interest in joining the site before. ^^; Only Okamura can make me do something like that...

So...I'm not sure if I'm eligible for the contest, since I live on the other end of the world from the judges. :d oh: I really want to hope they'll consider one of my designs but there's already been several amazing ones. This was my second design, done on Tegaki:

That smiling heart is his logo, called the "Peach Mark" in Japan.

Thank you, everyone! And I have some pretty big news now...

I am officially Myspace friends with Okamura!

I made an account last night and threw some pictures on it, and I might put up more of my artwork later on, but the thing is...he checks every profile before he accepts a friend request! Yasuyuki Okamura looked at stuff about me!

Here's his Myspace. If you scroll down to "Comments", currently the first comment there is mine:

岡村ちゃん!承認ありがとうございます!私はカナダに住んでいますが、あなたの音楽が大好きです。お元気ですか?
私は本当にあなたが新しい音楽を作って満足している。♪あなたはとてもクールだ!お大事に!

In English...

Okamura-chan!* Thank you so much for adding me! I live in Canada, but I love your music. How are you?
I'm really happy you're making new music. You are a cool person! Take care of yourself!

*He likes being called this by female fans.

He doesn't reply to comments, but I really hope he sees it. There are very few English fans on his friend list (out of nearly 4000), and I really wonder what he thinks about this!

Bonus: Here's a short TV promo from 1990, for the single CD release of "Ano Ko Boku Ga Longshoot Kimetara Donna Kao Surudarou", which literally means "I wonder how her face would look if I made that longshoot". I love this promo because of the set design, and of how he's actually really adorable at 0:06.
