Toby's death was slightly different in every Astro series. I don't think copyright was involved; the film producers just wanted to be original by not copying a method by which Toby had died before. Note how in every adaptation Tenma's attitude towards Astro is also slightly different. They're just trying to avoid doing the same old plot over and over again to keep it original and interesting.

Well I think they changed his death because sociaty today wouldnt accept it if the little boy had been lying dead next to a car with his father crying over his body. They had to eleminate the whole body part. They changed the plot because like Atom said they needed to spice it up. Although it was stupid of them to give it a fairy tale ended where Astro goes back to live with Tenma, but that what society wants. I would have liked to see Tenma die :d evil:. They basicly changed it so that it would fit what society would have wanted not Tezuka.

My theory with things like this; and not just Astro Boy is that when a movie adaptation gets into the hands of a Hollywood writer, producer, directer or whoever...

Is that the person doesn't get comfortable with original aspects. Like they may not have like the original death, or the character's costume, or looks. So they make changes to make the people working on it feel more comfortable. Or they make changes to make the content seem less offensive to the viewers.

In the case of the 2009 movie, the changes were mainly to make the movie more appealing to western audiences. They probably thought a car accident would be too graphic, so they had him vaporized so it wouldn't be as bad. (But even then, it still offended some people.) They also made him older because the producers wanted viewers to identify themselves more with Astro. And they also had Astro in his classic costume for only two scenes.

Obviously they didn't feel comfortable having a boy flying around in his "underwear" on screen, so they put him in clothes through most of the movie. There are a lot of reasons why Hollywood does things like this. Sometimes they can be understandable. But most of the time in adaptations unnecessary changes practically kill the movie.

I also think they made him older because society wouldnt be please with them if they vaporized a cute little nine year old.

Yes, probably that to. I never thought he looked like he was 13 in the movie anyway. The only give away of his age was Freddie Highmore's voice. But I still liked him as Astro nonetheless.
