
Hmph. It seems my .gif is being automatically converted to to a .jpg which is making only one frame from the .gif visible.

No worries. The program I use for 3D is called Blender. It's available for free at blender.org. Python is a scripting language. Blender uses it in part for plugins, and addons. The version of Blender you download will determine which version of Python you need. You can download Python from python.org. The latest stable release of Blender is 2.57b, and the corresponding version of Python is 3.2
