@ GLAB: Updates? Well, kinda...but it's mostly nerdy/techy stuff..and I never know if anyone wants to see that...or just the final image, you know? But...well, please read on. ;)

@ The forums: Haven't been around much lately, so this post may be kinda long.

So, I was getting hung up on the variation of the character design within the 1980's series... For some reason, even with the model sheets I had...it still seemed to not look enough like other images from the same series. Yes, I do know I can make my own version of Astro, and that's sorta what this version of the model has become...but I wanted something more.

So I started to look for the first book I ever saw an image of Astro in...which happened to be a drawing book...and I stumbled upon a book called Let's Draw Manga- Astro Boy. The book was so inexpensive, I bought it just to see if it was the book in question. After buying it, I saw there was good news and bad news...The bad news is that this is not the book that I saw the first image of Astro in, the good news is that this book is absolutely awesome. :)

First off, I should have known how awesome it was going to be, because this isn't some knock off type of book, it is in fact made by Tezuka Productions. Another thing is that I was only looking for insight to the 1980's version of Astro, but this book covers details of how to draw practically every version of Astro that has ever been drawn!

As soon as I opened the book and began flipping through it, I immediately thought of how interesting it would be to some of the awesome fan artists on this site, like GLAB, and AB03. This book really is awesome.

It's got a chart which covers how he's been drawn over the years, multiple model sheets for his whole body and specific parts of his body, x-ray and cutaway charts which show his underlying 'anatomy', and even small details such as how he refuels...not to mention everything is explained in great detail.

The only thing I would have liked to see, is a color chart...but that's just me knitpicking...because this isn't an "art of Astroboy", it's a "how to draw Astroboy" book. And it does that very well.

Ok, I'm just going to come right out and say it : BUY THIS BOOK. It's less than $10 United States dollars new, and less than $5 used. For that price, you really can't go wrong, especially if you like Astroboy and even if you don't make fanart at all. :)

At first I was going to scan a couple of the pages I mentioned above, but...I decided against it, because there are some images available to look at on Amazon. Maybe Tezuka Productions will release more volumes in a how to draw Astroboy series featuring different characters if there is enough interest? It would be great if they did. If they are all this inexpensive and informative, I would probably buy them all.

As for the book that I originally saw Astroboy in...I think I've also tracked it down...well, based on the art on the back cover...but I won't know for sure until the book arrives and I open it. ;) It's called : Tezuka School of Animation, 1: Learning the Basics That kind of makes sense, but the class I was taking at the time was more of a animation class than a drawing class. I can't to check this one out too!

Sorry for the long post... Hopefully I will be posting some sort of art or tutorials in the near future.

Cheers guys.

@ AB03 : Hehe...Hiya AB03...I didn't even see your post before. I'm glad you're considering getting the book for your birthday. I hope you do. I really like it. (clearly) :p

@ GLAB : Hello to you too as well GLAB. In all of my blabbering in my previous post, I forgot to simply say hi, heh. :)

I had heard of that book, Unhurdof, but I thought it was much more expensive than that. I'm tempted to buy it. I will not attempt to draw Astro myself, but it seems interesting.

A few years ago, somebody had posted a few scans of how to draw Astro's head and many of us got surprising results! Even mine wasn't too bad! :o hmy:

I would sure like to see that thread if you can find it. Especially your drawing. I bet it looks better than you think. ;)

Here's a quick video I made for a friend about how one can exploit 3D software to make 2d graphics. The image came from Strangewing's 2003 screenshots thread.

Here's a short clip of how I went about making the above image : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZF1b0rQNBs
