Hi everyone!
Well, I made it through hurricane Irene - and aside from having to use our generator, it seems we got through without a problem. HOWEVER, just down the mountain from where I live are dozens and dozens of downed trees, streams and rivers setting record flood heights, and people trapped in their cars, and otherwise evacuated. Our two main highways (the NY State Thruway, and Route 17) have closures all over the place, and the trains are not yet running to New York City.
One of my friends lives in a high-rise apt. building in nearby Middletown, and she sent these photos this morning. LOOK AT THE CARS ( AND YEAH, THE PEOPLE IN THE BOAT!!)
Last I heard there might not be a way for me to drive down to my job tomorrow, so I might get an extra day off - YAAY!! In the meantime, we just got a delivery of propane for our generator, so we're set for the night.
Hey Astrobuddy, you live in NYC - how was it for you? How about Dragonrider, SpaceCookie and Jeffbert, and AstroJulian?

People-though I've taken a break from the forums I don't know who else to turn to for this.
During Hurricane Irene one of my best friends' boyfriend was cut off from power and possibly injured (She won't give me details)
Right now she's devistated and is bawling in her room. I'm trying to calm her down over the internet but don't know how to handle something like this. And if he is seriously injured-or worse-I... really wouldn't know what to do for her. I'm no good in these scenarios but I don't want to feel like I'm being a bad friend. Please help me out. Are any of you having this sort of problem?

Thanks for sharing April.
Glad to hear you're alright. As soon as I heard about that evacuation I didn't think it would be possible and you were the first person I thought of. Good thing you didn't have to evacuate either.
Looks bad though and I haven't been keeping up with the news, although I did hear the evacuation order was lifted. Is it as bad as the news, and the NYC mayor was making it out to be?

Same thing here.
Hope your friends are okay, IAAS!
Our power & cable & thus phone were out, but not for very long. AC was restored at about 1 PM after only about 11 hours, & shortly thereafter the cable began to show some life, but the inernet took a bit longer. I have a CYBERPOWER PHONESAVER that I use instead of my cordless phone's AC adapter, & it worked the whole time; but as our phone is from COMCAST, it was of no use.
In all, as I rise rather late, I was inconvenienced very little by the outage. I have several COLEMAN D-cell powered florescent lanterns, so I had light at night.
The hurricane of a few years ago, left us in the dark for at least 3-4 days, & as we had well water in that house, it was that much more of a problem.
I lived in MD then, and it poured rain VERY HARD for several days straight. The tree in our backyard was uprooted, & blown right up to our kitchen window. It was so dark! But in our current house, there are many more windows & natural light is abundant. I hardly turn on any lights during the day.
I hope the rest of us are o.k.

I'm back FINALLY after 4 days without "normal" life, yet many others had it WAY worst than we did (found out our generator's fuel tank only held enough propane for one day - we spent a small fortune, and couldn't get water because we're on a community well!)
Our region is actually pretty devastated. A LOT of people lost homes, cars, roads washed out, the commuter line to NYC has been washed out in several spots and will be down for MONTHS affecting thousands of people. The farmers lost 75% of their crops, right at the height of harvest. We're lucky we live half-up a mountain, but right below us is a small river that did incredible damage. It's humbling and dreadful to see what 10 inches of rainfall can do!!
I understand people up in Vermont are actually cut off from the rest of the world from roads being washed out. Scary stuff!! Not wanting to go through that again any time soon!!
