By pure logic, he might decide that since saving some while others die is unfair, so perhaps he would stand there watching while all perish. :d evil:

I know that is a terrible thing to do, but I thought it might provoke some interesting responses. :D  In my own case, I am so indecisive that by the time I made up my mind, all would be dead. I take forever to decide which brand to buy, & even after putting an item in my cart, I sometimes go halfway down the isle & change my mind.

That's how i am , and that's why I only buy things online. Sure there's a shipping fee , but nonetheless , it helps from distractions like all of the shelves full of anime DVDs or games. For tangible things like food and drink, I have no problem except I go overboard on Asian food purchasing.

Since humans never operate by pure logic with the only exception are those who are emotionally impaired and only see cold logic and that's rare, unless someone was truly a self serving [jerk] who chose his clique and allowed others to suffer, the lot of us would just freeze. How could we choose when the stakes are so high? If it was me , it would take a lot of thinking which would be pointless considering that a phone would probably be of no use and weapons of any sort you have in your disposal might just add another tier of suffering for the others unless said psychopath had no backups to his/her said plan, but it's risky. If you knew beforehand, you could end the whole situation then and there, but that's unlikely.

I'd probably stand there too or I would fall into my anger and rage against them if the group of people included my family and friends, pick the closest object , and try to pick them off if I could if they didn't hold me down. The latter option would just go into bloodshed where i'd either end up dead with the others...it would just depend on infinitely complex situations which would be too long to list here . But that would be the last resort because if reasoning was possible , I would try that as I am more in line with pacifism than violence though I need to work at it more.

I think Astro, coming from a place of pure logic where emotions can be set aside, would sacrifice the least to save the most - basically what he did to himself at the end (save the earth by sacrificing his own life). I don't see that as heartless or cold, but as having an exceptional sense of purpose and/or faith.

As for selecting 10 people, I don't believe he'd do it -- he'd risk lives more to possibly save more.

Yeah, it seems like Astro to try to save more and take some risks. Its kind of challenging to decide wether to do something about it or to just select, as risking lives could mean the villains kill everybody. Although its something Astro would do.

It crunched the numerics of the situation and went with the law of averages in favor of the lives he could save. But you know the little guy would probably come up with a solution to save every life. Like James Kirk said..."I don't believe in a no win situation."

At least in the episodes there has been nothing which is too challenging for him to take on... Although having Kokoro, I personally believe that Astro would think more like a human than like a mere machine, and he'd take all the other information into account. For example, if there were only two options - save ten people, or save Uran/Zoran. :( Hmmm... maybe Astro would save Zoran........???

Well, you know... sometimes in order to relate to someone you need to stand in their red boots for a while. ;)

True... but considering we are neither in Star Trek or in Astro Boy, we could use the occult to switch bodies?

That's probably how I would react most likely, but different situations and circumstances change alot . The biggest thing is we won't know how Astro or how any one of us would REALLY act versus how we think we would act . Most people, under dire consequences , do things they would never do most of the time and are afraid to do anything. The small group of those who are heroes get killed or if they don't and survive are made heroes. I don't think I would be able to truthfully do anything other than think of :

A. Choose who lives and dies
B. How to get the hell out of there.

It just goes back to my long rant I posted earlier about if you would let your enemies die , even though it was not deserved, for your circle of friends and family . I don't know who the hell I would even choose personally if it were only five people and Astro, I believe would be the same.

In general, we will never know how each of us would act if in a situation other than the fact we'd be fearful and froze while everyone we love died in front of us.

I'm not sure I quite follow... So does that mean we're in Bewitched or somethin'? :p

I agree that we would all surprise ourselves a little if placed in such an unfortunate predicament. I would prefer to think that most people would not behave cowardly under such dire consequences, even despite that fact that stress and adrenaline could no doubt impair anyone's judgment.

I was thinking more along the lines of Rosemary's Baby or Supernatural or Buffy. If not those , FMA and Animorphs.

I have read the Hunger Games Trilogy and muddled a bit with human psychology and immersed myself in world history of many eras, and basically when it comes down to it human beings are just animals with a Napoleon complex. After you study those things in that depth, you realize how little different we are from the "beasts" we claim to be different from.

Once you have the adrenaline going , I'm convinced people can do anything under that or run. I do not see being cowardly as necessarily bad because on the other hand ,being a reckless imbecile can get all of them killed or do worse. I've never felt the effects of it for a while, but when I do , it's when I get totally pissed at someone or something. Usually its video games like GTA that do the trick and when it kicks in, I play better or I test the controller's plastic quality, but rarely get angry that way towards another person unless he or she did something detestable. But that hasn't happened for a while , so whatever.

Couldn't you just envision Tenma, programming late into the night . . . setting Astro's protocols for just such a situation? So maybe the question REALLY is . . . how do you think Tenma programmed Astro to respond to such a circumstance?

Then again - I also believe it to be implied that Astro also developed his personality/morals from a basic starting point (that would include obedience to the Robot Laws) - that being the premise behind Kokorro (a "human" heart and soul, which also implies free will).

If Tenma had a direct say in Astro's likely reactions, I believe he would respond "women and children first" then frail/injured and last resilient/healthy.

Left to his own mind, I'd be incline to think he attempt to save all or perish in the effort.

I agree with you April. Astro would probably try to save as many people as he could. And all the stuff that goes into programming would likely affect his decision making process as well. But..BECAUSE kokorro is designed to make him think in some ways like a human..I imagined he'd never be the same again after such an event. :( Even if he managed to save half the populace somehow..there would still be all those he didn't. And people being people...would likely blame him for it all. They'd ask "Why didn't you move faster?!" "What about my momma?!" "What about my daddy?!" "Where were you THIS thing happened?!"...And then the final blow I think would just crush his poor little heart to pieces. "Astro! You FAILED US!"

I wished Astro would just turn his back on humanity and enjoyed the fallout of their further suffering to make it clear he is the only reason why they live.

And someone would have to stand up for him and ask why he has to save them at all. And for the record, where the bloody hell are the other superheroes in this universe? IT always seems that the people do absolutely nothing to contribute ACTIVELY in fighting mechanical/superhuman evil and are always on the sidelines like a bunch of *****es.And calling them *****es is a disgrace to all of canine kind considering one of the best characters in Astro Boy was the Cyborg Lassie that had serious skills along with the other cyborg fidos in that Moon story with the Russians.

It is especially a disgrace to the corgie on Cowboy Bebop, those two stupid dogs...you get the point.

Yeah, didn't I get you there? You were all probably thinking I was about to talk about women weren't you guys?

A long story story short, humans haven't fought evil machines as actively as they should have with humans alongside their mechanical counterparts. Pretty shocking as it promotes human/robot equality(actually a human equality allegory) while but humans don't do anything besides being a side character and in occasion repair Astro.

Transformers has more on robot /human equality than Astro Boy , especially in Energon where Kicker fights the Decepticons in a suit while Daniel becomes a Headmaster.
