Astro: As long as they don't bundle me with Real Player 7.....ugh.....
His operating system would have to be super complex I think. Have you seen in the manga how they managed his memory? The set up they hooked him to at the ministry looked like a mid-evil torture rack!
One thing's for sure, Astro could have saved NASA billions in funding space probes and launching shuttles with payloads...
"Yeah....I'll get that sattilite up for you...it'll cost you a gallon of Ben and Jerry's though."
Cost of upkeep, how's your allowance Astro?

I love it. Astro: the ultimate Space Shuttle!
Edit One: Say . . . What flavor Ben & Jerry's would Astro want??? Lately I've been enjoying Peach Cobbler and Bonaroo Buzz!
Too bad Astro wasn't available to RETRIEVE that big ol' satellite that is supposed to drop on us any day now!!

Well, not really, someone still has to build him...

It was a failure anyways in comparison to Apollo. We should have made plans to settlement on the moon and use the ISS as the base of it . Sure the shuttles did bring scientific opportunities and kickstarted a way to get into space but now where are we at now because of it? America is now at the same point it was before Apollo and other countries like India and China are beating us. Not bad for them but it is bad for America .
Hopefully we follow through next time and colonize the moon as a race as a starting point for further colonization of the solar system.

I guess we have to agree to disagree here since I believe the Shuttle program to be a major success. It is the world's first re-usable space plane, and if we are to colonise the galaxies or at least nearby planets one day, rockets are simply not the way to go. Space junk is now a major issue with rocket stages and broken satellites often denting spaceships, and although they are only about 1 mm or something its still dangerous. Where is America now? I'd say one full step ahead of China and India, or even Russia in terms of getting astronauts into space. Even when thinking about colonising the moon, a space-plane which takes off on Earth, gets on the moon and gets back again is simply awesome!

We're one full step in debt, so much for our space program but besides the point...
I've though about what might have eventually happened to Astro had he not flown into the sun. With the progress of technology he could basically live as long as man was around but would he want to stay around that long?
I would think at some point Astro might ask for a decommision date of his own chosing..."Just hit the off button and oh i dunno....hmmm....put me outside a cigar shop like a wooden indian....naaaaa....turn me into a candy dispenser and I'll shoot white rabbits out of my butt guns!"
Would he really want to go on after all his friends get older and pass away?
"Nah....A street lamp! Hey I'll stand and make those funny beeping musicals and quote cool one liners!"
I dunno, I think after 70 or 80 years Astro might decide to shut down.
"And....become a sushi broiler at Kirado Sushi down the street."
"You guys have some serious Mommy issues."

They did have in the later stories a way to age robots by putting their brains into older looking bodies, but he flew into the sun????
I read that it was in the 1960's anime so is it canon compared to the manga?
