ASTRO BOY MANGA IN FULL COLOR

Postby ASTROBUDDY » 14 years ago

I just thought I would share with you guys a few color pages of the original Astro Boy manga as drawn by Dr. Tezuka for the magazine, Shonen. From the reprint edition, "TetsuWan Atom(u) by Tezuka Osamu Shonen Original" (originally printed in 1997), reprinting from the 1961summer holiday expanded edition released August 15, 1961, the 44th manga episode originally titled, "Mystery Man of the Blast Furnace" aka the fourth story in volume 11 of the Dark Horse reprint series, "Osamu Tezuka's Original Astro Boy" known as "The Blast Furnace Mystery", which was also adapted for the 1960s anime series as "Satellite R-45" (episode# 21) and the 1980s anime episode # 46, "Outer Spaceport R-45"! Those unfamilair with the story, Astro Boy is asked to use his ability to tell if a person is good or bad by a detective who wishes to the mystery of the apparent murders that seem to have been committed by his (the detective's) father. Needless to say Astro Boy solves the mystery and the story has a bit of a twist ending! Hope you guys enjoy!

I  :astro: :D

OMG I can't read Japanese, but there's that Tawashi, giving poor Astro grief again, right? We've all got at least one Tawashi in our lives! No matter what Atom does, Tawashi just WON'T be convinced of his virtue (and that of other robots). BTW do you mean TAWASHI's father committed the murders? Now THAT would be kind of funny!

These are great to see - hey, check out Atom's hair!! Dr. T kind had those points pretty long here, don't you think? Thanks, Astrobuddy!

Hi, AprilSeven! Obviously you have never read "The Blast Furnace Mystery" or seen the anime episodes adapted from it or you would have known that Inspector Gumshoe (aka Tawashi) was berating Atom for bringing in a suspect, that Atom could tell was a badman and that the young detective in the background was the one who wanted Atom to tell him if his father was a bad man and thus the murderer, after seeing the suspicious acts his father committed. But if you want the real lowdown on this story, checkout Jeffbert's review @TIE.

 Actually both this & SPACE AIRPORT (as featured in LION BOOKS VOL. 6) combine to give the plot of R-45.

Simply replace the boy with Atom, & alter a few other things, & behold: R-45. Note that T&T were working out of a suitcase rather than a kiosk.

Instead of the dad ejecting old robot bodies into space,

Lamp rids himself of Nylon who apparently chose a bad time to ask for a raise. :p

Oh, & there was an element of mass kidnapping of children. Characters included lizard men & other strange guys.

Fascinating! Is "Phantom of the Blast Furnace" as Schodt translates the original title in one of your large format books or smaller format books. I am curious to know. Thank you!

I will need to turn on my desk top computer to be sure, but, offhand, I think it was the large format, because the story was very short.
