Glowing Orbs
The night was cold and not a single cloud covered the stars. The moon sat high above the Spine Mountains and stared down below. The raven haired, silver eyed girl rolled across the cold wet grass as the blonde haired, brown eyed boy, Taron, stabbed his sword into the ground where she had once been. The faint moonlight cast a glow around Taron and his sword as he pulled it from the ground and held it above his head. She jumped to her feet
and swung her sword over her high above. Their weapons clashed and sparks flew through the dark. The moment she sensed her sword slipping she jumped from the path of Tarons sword and seemed to be dancing as her feet swept across the field and she dashed behind the horses. Tarons heavy footsteps came around the pack of horses and a reflection was cast from the point of his sword as he pulled it up. The girl held up her sword to block the blow and her arms shook from the impact.
She pulled back her sword as to hit Taron, but as her weapon was sweeping through air it cut through the hard hide of a little bay mare horse. The girl turned just in time to see it kick out and its hooves land hard on her leg. The girl dropped to her knees and yelped in agony. The bay horse whinnied, bounded over the fence, and then continued to gallop into the forest. The girl reluctantly ignored the pain and stood, by then Taron had already finished grabbing a rope and lantern. He was about to go catch the mare, but the girl stopped him.
Taron, it is my fault the mare, Chastity, ran off. I should be the one to find her. She said.
But, Victoria, you are hurt. You should go back inside a rest, while I find Chastity. Taron said.
The girl stared with her silver eyes burning into his Taron, I may be minutes younger than you, but that doesnt give you a right to tell me what I can and cant do, brother.
A sigh came from Taron as he handed over the objects. Will you ever do what is best for you?
Victoria laughed hoarsely No brother, because nothing is for me.
With that the girl began to walk in the direction the horse had gone. She wasnt supposed to be learning to fight, because it wasnt the girly human thing to do, but she didnt care. Taron, her twin brother, enjoyed helping her defy the normal so he agreed to teach her. She and her brother had never had a chance to meet their parents, but from the stories she knew they were both great warriors. Victoria wanted to continue the legacy of female human warriors after her mother. The only female Homo sapiens that were considered able to fight like men were elves. Human females had to work for that title.

She had been wandering for hours when she finally saw the outline of the mare in the small amount of moonlight that broke though the tree tops. Victorias calf had cramped and she had been reduced to a brisk limp. She made clicking noises with her tongue as she approached the mare and slid the rope over the horses neck. First, she ran her hands down each of the horses long legs to insure she hadnt gotten them caught on anything. Then she held up the lantern to the mares thigh and gasped at just how deep her little sword had cut into the horses hide. She had just began to walk the horse home, when suddenly Chastity sniffed the air and took off running again. The rope was pulled from the girls fingers and it burnt her hands.
She turned around and her jaw dropped for she couldnt believe her eyes. It appeared as if the sun was rising as a giant ball of light came over the tree tops and stopped right above her. Victory wanted so badly to run, but her feet seemed like they were covered in rock. A giant ball of light changed to millions of orbs and half of them sped to make a dome around her. They spun so fast that a continuous stream of light was left behind them. The other half of the orbs made another dome out in front and spun in the opposite direction. In the other dome a small figure started to grow inside it. The figure took the shape of a puppy, but then continued larger until it was the size of a horse. Victoria held her breath as the orbs began to reside closer to her and she could feel their essence brushing her skin. They came in and at the same time all of them bounced against her body then dispersed into the trees.
She dropped like a stone and laid there with her face in the dirt. Her consciousness suddenly felt as if it was an open book and anyone could enter her mind. A hot breath wafted over her back and she twisted over to see the horse sized creature standing above her. She couldnt even scream as it looked her over. It had long black, grey, and white fur growing over its body, it had a pointed face, black nose, and spiked ears. It almost seemed to be
a wolf. She held up her hand to the giant wolf and prayed it wouldnt tear her to shreds. The wolf creature tilted its head then thrust its wet nose into her palm. At that moment its consciousness joined with hers and she could sense all of its calm feelings and thoughts. She felt braver and cracked open her eyes running her fingers though its rough hair. The wolf creature actually looked like a puppy; with its big paws and stout nose. She pictured the giant wolf pup tearing her to shreds and the wolf must have sensed that for it shook its head. Questions raced through her mind of whom, what, and why. Thats when a foreign memory entered her head. It was of a purple, yellow, and orange sunset with a town nestled in between two hills. Above all of the buildings stood a giant brown wolf staring down at all of the smaller people below it and on its back sat a tall elven man. Wait, she had seen that image before, it was actually a painting of the first shashn rider, Grhad. The image zoomed in on Grhad and his wolf.
Me, you. The rough foreign voice of the giant wolf pup said in her mind.
Youre a shashn, and Im a rider?
