The French broadcasts still playing here in Canada today are so bad. A "2009 restoration" is noted in the credits, but apparently to them a restoration means cutting the top and bottom of the picture to make a 1980's TV show into widescreen, and terrible compression that shows pixelly dots appearing on the screen when there's sudden movement.

me too, it kinda makes me wonder, what it takes to learn a second language :whistling: [/QUOTE]
I picked up a few Japanese words from watching anime with the subtitles & Japanese audio. I also have a small English - Japanese dictionary that I use with my region 2 DVDs; though most words I look up are not in it.

I found it on the french website, but not on the english one.

Wow so it really is only on the french. plus it won't let me see anything because of my area. :( oh well let me know via PM when you find out more about the broadcasting.

I saw "Astro le Petit Robot" on my digital TV listing and freaked out, but I was pretty disappointed when it turned out we aren't subscribed to the French Teletoon Retro. My sister said she's seen it on weekends on the regular French channel, so hopefully I'll be able to catch it then. (It's edited exactly the same as the Canadian dub, so I'm eager to compare versions.)

Oh I agree, this is awful. I'm still really glad to have been able to catch the episodes I was missing, but I don't understand why they did this either. It's not a HD channel, so why would they want to make the image widescreen? And it doesn't even quite fit the widescreen format anyway. :shifty:

Even on the available half series on DVD here, the colors are washed out. I recall reading the forum of the company who had originally released the series in Europe, and they had said that the masters were in a bad shape and they had to work hard to even reach that result. I think they used these for half of the series, with the exception of the intro. They put back the one we were used to here, unlike on the DVDs.

I hope you will be able to catch it on a channel or another, Fauna, but I do have to say I'm really surprised to learn that it would be available on two different channels at the same time. I hope it wasn't a mistake!

I believe it's the same as the American broadcast order. One of the episodes I recovered, Astro Vs. Aliens, had a preview for The White Planet as the next episode, and I've just confirmed that it's just the same as the North American DVD order.

Hmmm . . . I can't wait to see what arrives on my doorstep from Amazon.com - it's supposed to be the 1980's boxed set, but they listed Steven Bednardski and other Canadian names, so I am NOT SURE what I'm going to receive!!

Due in around January 3 . . .

Perhaps somebody incorrectly listed the artists. Don't worry, you won't get the 1980 Canadian dub, it was never released on DVD. And should you happen get it, I'm sure you'll find quite a lot of people here who would want to buy that one!

Amazon's listing for that boxset has always been weird, it's even named "Astro Boy Collection Box Set (2003)" I personally wouldn't worry too much about it.

I bought the one from Archambault today. It sucks paying twice the price it used to go for. :( I'll keep it sealed for a while though. If I get lucky and Japan releases a Blu-ray set then I can sell the DVDs as brand new.
