I'm not going to get into a heated debate about this.. Just that this discussion made me sad... and I couldn't finish reading it.

On the bright side, Astro will have something that we will never have - a family that never dies.

This was fascinating to read through, and includes some ABO members still active as well as some we don't see as often - or ever!

How will he handle death?
First of all, he seems to not fear "death" at all. From flying into the sun, to the manga where two lovers re-activate him in the robot museum, Astro doesn't seem to have anything remotely like our human apprehension of death.

I have a feeling that as time moved forward, and his family and friends all passed on, Astro might even consider "retiring himself" depending upon what was happening in the world, and who he was involved with. Surely technology would eventually pass his level of competancy, and he might need to be recreated in some way . . . and then, would he still "be" Astro?

I somehow picture him saying, "My work here is complete, and I'll rest unless someone needs my help" - when they could reactivate him.

Of course, as Jeffbert says, Tezuka might not have ever given a thought to this, but it seems like Astro - in all his "humanity" would also want to experience death, as part of his life. The big question, is . . . would/could Astro go to Heaven? I certainly would hope so!

I agree that this is an interesting thread to read through. It's something most readers/watchers of Astro Boy most likely don't consider.

Like Astro Forever said, he would have emotional support if anyone would happen to die that was close to him. Also, Atom would gain new human friends through the years as we would "live". Sure, they would inevitably die eventually, but I would think Atom would have to come to terms with that fact once he becomes friends with them. I'm sure Atom would probably just try to enjoy the time he has together with his new friends while their living and try to ignore the fact of their inevitable death during those times.

Also, I think he would eventually "die" despite new and improved technologies coming out through the years either through a fight between one of his enemies, a horrible accident, or through his own will in case the torch must be passed on.

I agree with this. Atom knows what he is getting himself into when he gets into dangerous situations. He knows he could get himself "killed", but I doubt he really cares about that. As long as he can provide a shred of hope for people or robots when they are being threatened, he will help them, even if it means being destroyed trying.

Man, that last sentence sounded really corny...

He could be recreated, or as I said, the torch could be passed on. I'm sure through the years as Atom saves the day countless times, someone would be inspired to build a hero like him. I believe that if Atom would be completely destroyed, he could be rebuilt as an entirely new robot or have a new robot hero carry on the torch.

I would say no since he's only man-made, but I think Tobio would certainly go to Heaven. :)
