"Dragon Ball" Takes the Gold in Oricon Ranking of Top 10 World Class Anime and Manga

General public ranks anime's Olympian global appeal

In time for the Olympics and the World Cosplay Summit, Oricon, best known for monitoring and reporting on the sales of entertainment media, conducted a scientific survey asking what were the real world class anime/manga... the ones with Olympian global appeal that carried the flag for anime in the march of global media.

A field of the general public, not necessarily anime fans, ranked the following...

Dragon Ball
More than a decade and half after the anime ending, Dragon Ball was the overwhelming top pick. It was the flagship of Shonen Jump during its Golden Era, driving it to a circulation of 6,530,000 copies. Beyond that, the surveyed couldn't help but notice its immense popularity around the globe.

One Piece
The surveyed said that One Piece currently carries the flag for the principles of Shonen Jump - "victory", "effort", "friendship", and that its fundamentals have universal appeal... regardless of nationality or gender.

Doraemon
Doraemon was identified as a work that parents can share with their children. The surveyed also spoke of their pride in Doraemon's international popularity.

4. Naruto
5. Pokemon
6. Neon Genesis Evangelion
7. Captain Tsubasa
8. Mobile Suit Gundam
9. Akira
10. (tie) Astro Boy
10. (tie) Slam Dunk

Even though Astro Boy is only 10th, what matters is that the series actually made the list. Remember that the people could have said any anime and manga for this poll.

Regardless, I am pleasantly surprised that Astro Boy made the list. It's clear that, at least in Japan, Astro Boy is still very relevant.

Glad to see that Astro Boy made the list. The legacy it has established deserves to be honored throughout the rest of anime industry's history.

Also glad that Dragon Ball topped the poll.

Agreed. Also glad it was Dragon Ball and not Dragon Ball Z. Didn't like that as much.
Astro Boy has history but Dragon Ball has a cute girl in a playboy bunny suit ;p

Actually, the Dragon Ball manga is both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. They didn't split the manga between Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z in Japan.

Well One Piece is obviously the best selling manga in Japan ever so he ?
This list is based on International sales but the popularity of DragonBall was at his top when at least manga sales in country's like the USA weren't even anything compared to what Anime made at the time so DragonBall being #1 i don't really understand what there getting at.
They might have overlooked some things and have just picked at frachises as a whole in any case Naruto is way to low as well considering it's at the top in Japan and doing maybe even better outside of it.

Also : The surveyed also spoke of their pride in Doraemon's international popularity Really ? i din't knew that just how many territories even have this franchise ?

: no Phoenix no Lupin ? :shifty: if it's internationally it makes sense then ...

but thank god Bleach isn't in it that has only been on top of it's game for a few years and then fell off !!!

Supose this is kinda verry importand to note :
A field of the general public, not necessarily anime fans, ranked the following...

Even now, Dragon Ball is still very popular. There is still a lot of merchandise coming out for the series including video games. Dragon Ball Kai probably revived the fandom somewhat as well, though obviously the series didn't do well enough to continue into the Buu arc.

Not to mention that a new movie for the series is coming to theaters in 2013.

I think it has to do with the fact that Dragon Ball has been around a decade and a half longer than One Piece. One Piece is rapidly climbing in sales internationally, but I have a feeling that with the overall media of both series, Dragon Ball has the overwhelming lead.

That confused me too. Apparently, Doraemon is really popular in southeast Asian countries. I know here in America though, Doraemon is practically nonexistent. I guess we have to remember that this was voted on in Japan.

As much as I enjoy getting into Astro Boy, Dragon Ball deserves the fame it has gotten because of the wide appeal it has and how it explores so much areas. It takes a lot of risks and while there are flaws with the story, in the long-run it paid off.

@Shiyonasan: The ratings were always good; it's just that they never saw the need to push it into the Buu saga unless it did so well that it was worth doing such a thing. Apparently, it didn't meet that extremely high threshold.

The ratings where good but the Kai Brand itself din't even sell infact it did worse in sales when it still had the Kai brand also DVD's and Blu-rays weren't selling from Kai so Toei could still have continued it but they wanted to take Toriko before some one like Pierrot,A-1 Pictures etc did.

I know for a fact Toei wanted Fairy-Tail for there Dream 9 Block but Kai was still running when A-1 Pictures had taken it so they saw reason to cut Kai off after the Cell saga even the last episode was never showed on Japanese tv after the disaster that hit Japan they just wanted to start with Toriko and din't care about the last episode.

Another thing though One Piece has completly taken over DragonBall in Japan so one might wonder if only Japanese where asked in this ? but then agian if they asked older pepole it would make sense i guess

Considering Oricon conducted the survey, I would venture to guess that all, if not the vast majority of voters, were Japanese.

Probably the reason that Dragon Ball is #1 is because the general public was asked, which would presumably include older people in that group.

Anime, yes. Manga, no. They probably didn't make the list because none of the Ghibli films are long-running series like the 11 series you see on this list. As a whole, Studio Ghibli is pretty world class in my opinion, but I don't think it would be fair to put Ghibli as a whole on this list.
