Tezuka's "Barbara" has been published in English

Postby AprilSeven » 13 years ago

As some of you know, I was a $35 backer of the Kickstarter project to translate and publish Osamu Tezuka's adult manga from 1973-74, "Barbara."

I wasn't sure how I was going to respond to this book -yes, it is VERY different from Astro Boy - but I'm finding it almost impossible to put down. I received it just a day ago, and I'm more than halfway through it (with a full time job, family stuff and choir practice mixed in ;) )

What I find so stunning is Tezuka's skill as a storyteller, and he's an incredible draftsmanship. It's more like "reading a movie" - more like "Pluto" - but I have to say - even more gutsy and dramatic than Urasawa's work, which I loved.

Osamu was blessed with the ability to write powerfully and succinctly, and also illustrate with imagination and a film director's "eye." It is incredibly sophisticated, because he's telling a borderline psychedelic tale of drama, and then will unexpectedly insert humor or almost "wackiness" but somehow keep the whole thing from becoming silly or exploitative.

Frederik Schodt wrote the introduction, and sets the stage for what Tezuka is doing here . . . this work is he venture into "modern" manga; his response to people writing him off as a mere "children's storyteller."

"Barbara" is very, very dark and goes places I certainly don't think about, but I often wondered what Dr. Tezuka thought of the culture of the 1960's, hippies, drugs, "free love," and exploring the occult. I've got a LOT more to say about this fascinating book, but I want to finish it first, and hopefully can talk about it with more forum members. Yes, there is nudity and some graphic depiction of things that make me go  and  but not THAT bad.

If you're reading it too, let me know what you think!!

Well glad to see more members becoming fans of his adult works here, i still have to wait 17 days for it ship out plus the time it takes for it to arrive from the UK to Holland but i still have some 1100 pages of Buddha to finsh off first.

It however is going to be a dubble dip once again because i already had Barbra in German but i haven't toched upon it since i got it and since i know english just a bit better it really doesn't do anything now...

Anyway are you now also going to pick up Apllo's song,MW,Kirihito,Adolf etc ?
And talking about the nudity it's sure something you have to get used to the first time around but after a while it's just fine.

And after watching Kanashimi no Belladonna (meaning Belladonna of Sadness) that was made by Mushi pro when Tezuka left the company still based on his style you have seen it all weirder than weird so watch that movie i guess  nothing can bother you anymore about that kinda stuff.

I'm sure I will read/watch whatever I can that was produced by this amazing man! Actually you see a fair amount of visually far-out (in an almost psychedelic way) sight-gags and scenes without dialogue in the 1960's Astro Boy episode (especially the last two seasons never released in English).

But in the 1980's version of AB, Tezuka pretty much presents the story in a straightforward (and more child-friendly?) style. And, of course, in the 09 movie and 2003 series, there is really no evidence of this "trippy" side of Tezuka.

I don't know whether or not he ever dabbled in drugs and the lifestyle of the 60's - but his work has way more "deconstructed" and experimental visual/communication elements to it than I would have imagined. I thought it was a fluke in 60's Astro Boy, but now realize he was as much of a breakthrough artist as Andy Warhol or Picasso. But instead of million dollar works hanging in a museum - he used that kind of "outside the box" method of communication to tell a story shared with the masses in a mass media: comic books.

I really have a whole new appreciation of the man.

I think F. Schodt wrote that :tezuka: was unhappy with the adult themed comics that were rapidly becoming more popular. He (as I recall) only wrote such things to remain relevant.

BTW, I too, have BARBARA pre-ordered.

Yes i can see that being the case although he did mention many times that Ode to Kirihito was his favourite considering his background as a doctor it doesn't suprise me.

Though i think he enjoyed working on Black Jack,Phoenix (Buddha?) the most because those have serious themes and go about doctors stuff especially Black jack but he was still be able to put many jokes in them.

I just finished reading my replacement copy today, & can say that I found this story both weird & disturbing. Not so much as MW, but still, I guess there are some things that really freak me out.

You're right, Jeffbert, it WAS weird and disturbing. And (unlike sweet and inspiring Astro Boy) I find that I don't think much about the book now that it's been about 2 months since I read it.

I finished it Yesterday it was pretty epic along my favourite Tezuka works that i have read, i really liked the explanation about witchcraft and all the poetry and other art References and the twisted plots Yosuke Mikura turned out to be even more messed up than he already was before he met Barbara.

I've slowly been exploring Tezuka's other works as they become available. I just finished Princess Knight and I've started Dororo. Both of these were just added to our libraries' shelves (the books look brand new). I'm hoping they will add more titles soon.
I've already read all of the available Blackjack series as well as Nextworld. I think they have all of 'Adolf' and 'Buddha' which I will get next.
