Heh, considering the target demographic, probably not. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, either. The 60's and 80's animated series were more or less aimless a lot of the time, with self-contained plots for each episode, with the exception of the 80's "World's Greatest Robot". (My exposure to the 60's series is rather limited, though.)

I'd very much like to see these obscure stories in English. Heck, I'd be pretty glad if I could read the rest of the English volumes... (I wanna see the one with Cobalt! That's Volume 15, right? ... Or was it Volume 9?)

My bad; the 1st grade series opens with Atom & the two kids (04/1972). There are 4 installments & 28 pages in this part, though 2 pages were not about the comic, but rather single panel jokes, such as the one about Uran's kid body. Then comes the part with Fooler, which May have been influenced by STAR TREK'S DEVIL IN THE DARK. Here, a space octopus' eggs have been taken & sold by Fooler. Atom tells him they are eggs, but he cares not, until they all hatch. This one is dated 09/1972.

Then, Atom appears to be in his own time, because Ochanomizu is there, & no mention of time travel is made (10/1972). Thus, starting with the Fooler arc, I believe an entirely different story is presented; that is, it does not seem to be a continuation of the adventure with the kids. Anyway, this one is about a weight-bearing robot that has a problem with his being ugly. 2 pages

11/1972: Atom meets Spica again, she is out of energy, so he shares some. He did not know her, but she knew him; & has come to destroy him. While he is merely trying to revive her, it seems like he is copping a feel.

When Atom flees, she summons a large robot, but as the two fight, she cheers for both, then destroys the large one:

So ends this story.

12/1972: Atom comes across a large baby robot, crying for his mama. It turns out his paret is a normal-sized boy; a mere 2 pages.

01/1973: Atom's world, Tamao, Kenichi, & Shibugaki complain about a lack of snow in Tokyo; Atom brings some from elsewhere. Trouble follows, when authorities forbid Atom to cause it to snow in Tokyo. :santa: He makes a huge snowman atop Tokyo Tower; 2 pages.

02/1973: a zoo panda complains of being watched all day long, so Atom makes something he hopes people will find more interesting. :hyo: 2 pages.

03/1973: final 2 pages are about a robot that likes to destroy things; Ochanomizu turns it into a bowling ball.

Kinda awkward to be honest.
Anyway, I would like to see stories which Atom have his usual look.
And to think about, that design may had inspired both Rockman and Rockman X.

these 3 PHOTOs minus the text, were included in unit 7 (I think it was 7) of the original stories.

Since Tezuka gave him the ability to create liquids (or is it just juice) out of air.

He was supposed to also have the ability to time travel, but from Jeffbert's descriptions, he does not do much of that.

Jeffbert, would you please clarify one thing? In your descriptions you mention that the brother and sister, (I'm presuming that they are brother and sister) appear in every episode except the last one which I believe can be described as a wrecking robot who then gets to sublimate his destructive behavior as a bowling ball. Does this mean that the children are some how involved in the chapters with Dr. Fuller?

Also I can never stop thanking you (and Stragewings) enough for bringing this forgotten piece of Astro Boy history to light. This must also mean that Kobunsha published the scholastic magazines, "Fourth Grader" and "First Grader".

One thing I must say--Tezuka's artwork here is truly a discovery. Especially the action scenes of him flying. I don't mind the chest armor, but the dial on his forehead is a little too much.

All in all I thank you again for sharing.

BTW, what do you think of this design and the stories Tezuka uses to introduce it?

I  :astro: :)
