You obviously missed my point, Toshio. You don't have to agree, and it doesn't have to be a "negative" thing to disagree.

Closing the thread is not called for - and even if you are the only person who holds your opinion, it is a legitimate topic and certainly given me insight into how the rest of the world views the various dubs of the different animes.

I enjoy your contributions to ABO, and have one more comment on this topic . . . You don't really hear anyone call Atom "Astro Boy" in the 2003 dub either. They call him "Astro" more than anything else. "Astro Boy" is actually an awkward name - more of an adjective than a real "name."

So, in the end, Atom and Uran's original Japanese names really do function best as their names, don't they?

What displease much these last years is just like this...
Changes in everything including awkward names and lies left in the plots.
Frankly, it should have ended...
I really wished my country to start making faithful translation of the original.
One of the most frustating issues is the case of Tokusatsu...
And the reason is that america copyright these shows to get adaptations, so other countries cannot have the original content.
It feels quite awkward for a sister being called "Astro"...

Astro is close enough to Atom that Frederik Schodt left it that way when he did the translation of the Manga for Dark Horse. Listen to the Anime of the 1980's Astroboy recently uploaded to Youtube. This is undubbed with subtitles and (hopefully) has the original Japanese sound track (I think the subtitles are a bit defective in translation, in the headless robot episode was called DanDan's neck, but they obviously meant head). Anyway the song to the ending titles contains BOTH names for Atom, IE: Tetsuwan Atom and Astro-boy. In the 2003 anime Dr. Oshay named him after a piece of equipment he found in the lab, with the english word "Astro" on it. I don't think the Cells were redrawn before we saw the episode in the States.

Now as far as Uran is concerned, only Fred Ladd used the name Astrogirl, and in the 1960's it made sense. As far as the English dubbed original Anime is concerned she will always be Astro Girl. But in the Dark Horse manga, and in the 1980's anime the correct name of Uran is used. Who the hell renamed her in the 2003 anime and why?
