Haha! I'm like you; I fell in love with Astro Boy after watching the movie. <3 Even, like halfway through the film I was like, "This is SO my new favorite movie..." So immediately afterwards I wanted to know what the original manga was about and before I knew it, I had a new obsession ^_^

I saw the movie sometime in early December, so yeah, I'm a real newbie :3

And I know, right? How can people not like him? ^^ I thought he was freaking adorable in the movie. Watching it I was thinking, 'Gosh, this kid can't get any cuter!' The next day I started watching the 2003 series. Boy was I wrong. I had to pause each episode every 5 minutes just to let out a long-held-back squee. Because I'm an 18-year-old girl who needs a new hobby? ;P

But anyways! Back on topic! It is really cool that Astro Boy has been around this long and still is very popular. This is definitely the first fandom I've been a part of that has had such a widespread fanbase and that has been around for such a long time. Plenty of new fans coming in to keep the numbers growing ^_^ Astro Boy fandom for the win!!! *hugs you all*

I thought the Astro Boy fan base has been pretty small in recent years, but recently, activity has been getting better on this forum

I was first introduced to Astro Boy on Toonami with the 2004 English dub, but I never got a chance to watch more than one episode at the time. Now I'm watching the series and promptly enjoying it.

And yeah, Astro Boy is so cute. But that's Japan for ya.

Tetsuwan Atom is better with the series spirit intact and no cuts, hope new translation groups stop butchering the series and trying to hide it's japanese origins.

Messing with the concept of characters, story and cutting down the emotion is quite uncalled for.

Many people end up shy away from the series thinking it's just a souless action show, when it's the fault of the dub.

Hope they don't bring back silly puns for names.

In a endearing anime with a tragic story, silly puns for names are quite uncalled for.

The series should not broadcasted as if it's just a souless action show.

I've noticed there was a lot of inconsistency with the dialogues if compared with the original 2003 series.

It was pretty noticiable in early episodes like "Atlas" which the voices didin't match what was happening.

Same happened in the episodes featuring Pluto as well.

We need to get a dub which faithful to the original which don't try to fool the viewer.

That's the best way to keep the popularity and get new fans.

It's not from today that there are people bashing the series when it was fault of the dub who wanted to make "Astro" sound like a angry child who liked to say jokes when it was uncalled for.

Great thread racoonangel, I've liked Astro for many years... I used to watch this show in both French and English in the 80's. He's truly an inspiring character!

Although I personally thought they could have done much more with the movie, I also liked it alot. It took me some to get used to seeing a cartoon Astro as 'CGI' but he was darned cute! The movie has both pros and cons worth discussing, but I'm much more glad to see it inspires new fans. :)

I've been a fan of Astroboy for 28 years now... there are some here that have been a fan far much longer than myself. I really wish you would express yourself in a more respectful manner. I personally didn't care much for many aspects of the movie. But I will never say it sucks.

We respect your opinion but not your attitude. Get where I'm coming from?

I wasn' talking about the movie, I was talking about the 2003 dub.
The way which they despicted the character was completely against what he was in the original japanese series.

Making the character sound like a rude hero of sorts instead of being young child is not a good idea.

Also, it's awful when they hid the fact it was a japanese series, specially when they omit any refference to the japanese.

Many series got silly puns for names, like "Morty Mortimer" from Shaman King dub.

And such name doesn't even make sense and specially for a boy who is afraid of ghosts.

Silly puns are non coherent for an story like Tetsuwan Atom and in special for dramatic characters who are dealing with their personal loss.

So, it's you who don't got what I was talking about.

I really wish a better dub which stay true to the original, because american dubs are often used as basis for translations.
But, despite being easy to translate, their quality is not assured.

I wasn't talking about the movie either, I was merely stating my opinion of the movie, which in this thread talks about the popularity of Astroboy in general. That's my point. Just because I wasn't fond of the movie, doesn't mean I have to say why it sucked. I can easily state what I didn't like about it without being offensive. Same with you and your feelings about dubs.

But this is now off topic. Nothing more to say, unless you are talking about what you like about Astro/Atom rather than what is against personal favor.

Whatever you said doesn't deny the fact many people got shy away from the series due the lack of the emotion in the dub.

We need a dub which stay true to the original without hidding it's roots.

There is a huge clash of quality between the original japanese and the american dub.

One is clearly seem in the episode Atlas which was demonstrated in a video from youtube.

I believe the series will get more impact if they stop removing the best scenes and stop putting techno music instead of the original soundtrack.

And bluray releases must have the original voices with subs for better quality releases.
The fact the 2003 series dub lacked much quality is undeniable.

The Verdict

Sony is ordered to pay the producers of the series all of their profits as recompense for the disrespect they have shown the creators of Astro Boy.

We need a dub which respect the original creators instead of hidding the series roots and messing with the plotlines.

If a dub doesn't respect the original creators, then how somebody can respect that dub?
