Time Machine episodes?

Postby Toshio » 12 years ago

So, a friend did mention about Time Machine in Tezuka works, so I was wondering how many appeared through the course of the series?
I do know the original mangá, 1963 series, 1980 and 2003 (though the context was quite different from the previous versions) had related episodes.

Did it appeared once in each series?
Or it happened more than once?

There were at least two, maybe three episodes in the 1963 series with time travel. "a day to remember" (manga title, not sure of the episode in the us dub), "time machine" they go back and deal with dinosaurs, and another one that might have been time travel or alternate reality.

Without checking, I estimate no fewer than 6 B&W episodes have time machines in them. There was one that was even written using Welle's THE TIME MACHINE as a basis, complete with Morlocks & Eloi, though I believe they were named differently, & were insects.

A few others, in no particular order:
  1. WESTWARD, HA! (This one was based on Tezuka's BULLET HOLE IN THE WILDERNESS/GALLUP TERRITORY; reprinted in SF MIX)
  2. TERRIBLE TIME GUN (Based on A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHER'S COURT) Though I was saving this for my book

Tezuka wasn't shy about basing his manga's on classic stories, or using them tongue in cheek. He had one series of stories lampooning 'Gone with the wind".

TERRIBLE TIME GUN (Based on A CONNECTICUT YANKEE IN KING ARTHER'S COURT)

Really!? That's darned cool. And it's one of my favorites, and also truly bizarre when you consider that the castle was on the site of Dr. Ochanomizu's lab (IN JAPAN   :lol :) . But (as a 10-year-old Astro-smitten fangirl) I just LOOOOVED Astro as a knight!!

That reminds me of the 1980's episode where someone from the future takes Atom, Uran, BlackJack and Penoko back in time on a mission.

Yes, it was Rock.

He used to make hero like roles back then.

The Time Machine from 2003 was very different.

Also, I wonder what was Atom's outcome of being sent to an alternative reality.

There was such an episode in the '60s, the only other episode in that series with Dr. Tenma in it. Astro meets Tobio (who didn't die in that alternate universe, so there WASN'T and Astro in it either).

That episode obviously uses plot elements of the B&W time-travel one, & BJ manga #23, Kidnap. I think it is reprinted in vol 2 of the VERTICAL series, & is also in the VIZ series. :p

Kidnap is Also rendered in Black Jack anime, but kidnappers feign working for Black Jack & take Pinoko to amusement park.
