Does the Tech exist...

Does the tech exist to make a robot that looks like Astroboy exist? I don't expect an A.I. in it. Just that it can move. Think the Tech exists?

It's fairly possible. But would it weight *only* 30 kg , I'm not sure...
The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.

Well at this point I would be happy to see a Remote Control Astroboy for proof of concept for the robotics end of it.

I think it's possible you could make it look like Astro. There are robots that look like real people and robots that look like... Well... This...

I'm sure if you mix the two together you could get a robot that looks like Astro.
As for what he actually does, I'm not sure that can be done. I'm pretty sure the machines guns are possible, they'd just have to be remote control because having them be controlled by voice command would be stupid. For many reasons.

By the way, the robot is Leonardo. He's a NASA robot and he's absolutely amazing. I'm not sure if they're still doing research with him though.

Also consider the animitronic puppets at the Disney theme parks. They are really mechanical puppets, with an external power source and are tethered to a power/control cable. Some of them CAN walk (a short distance) on stage, though most just stand or sit (Lincoln stays in one place but does get up out of his chair IIRC). I wish that Tezuka productions and Disney would get together and make an audioanimitronic Astro! (Or HAS THIS been done at Disney Tokyo?)

I'm pretty sure Japan won't be letting America do anything with Astro for a long time considering what we've done to him...

It's also possible to have the robots react using facial expressions and gestures in real time. Again, I use Leo as an example as he isn't remotely controlled. If these programs were put into a robot that looks like Astro, then it could very well react at least a little bit like how he was intended to. They could also program a voice that sounds like his to react, though it probably would only be able to say things Siri can say. Siri did respond when I called her stupid once. It was quite surprising!
We do have the technology to make a somewhat Astroboy, but not a 100% fully functioning one.

And flight would be out of the question. We do not have the tech for unlimited rocket flight like Astro could do.

What have WE done to him? If you are talking about the 2009 movie, that was a joint production with Japanese studios. The movie was released in many different languages, with different actors doing the voices. The last time that an American studio by itself had anything to do with the production of an Astro Boy anime for release in the US, was back in '63, and Tezuka was quite pleased with the result (despite the censorship and editing necessary for the American market). IIRC the '80 and '03 series were dubbed at Sony or another studio controlled by Japanese interests.
Or are you thinking of all the McDonalds and Burger King cheap toys made in China?

As far as the Disney connection (Tezuka productions could have sued over the Lion King issue but didn't) I was thinking of a possible joint venture between Tezuka Productions and Disney, something that almost DID happen when the good Dr. was still alive.

I tried to solve THAT problem by using air breathing electric jet engines. I imagined a power source providing almost unlimited electric power (nuclear fusion with direct conversion of the ejection of subatomic particles to an electric current via an electro-static field. NOT BULLSHIT!). While possible in theory, it's still years away from even being prototyped. The electric jet principle IS possible, NASA uses a version of this in the ion rockets powering some deep space craft.

What have WE done to him?

We've created the monstrosity that is the Now! comic series, the horrible dubbing in everything but the 60s version, and the fact that the last "collaboration" with America (Astroboy movie) was a huge flop in Japan. I wouldn't blame them if they decided to stop working with us anymore.

From Wikipedia:
"The Astro Boy license was sold to Tony C. Caputo by a "Japanese national", whom actually had no legal access to Tezuka's characters. (Since the bankruptcy of Mushi Production in 1973, and due to the ensuing court-ordered settlement, ownership of Tezuka's copyrights came into question and would not be resolved for almost thirty years."
OK that explains how they got away with it. There were some other un-authorized Astro comics released as well during the popularity of the '63 series. This sort of thing has been the bane of every copyright holder since the begining of time.

We should probably remove the link to Now Comics on our main page (except as a foot note) since to give them ANY credit would be a dis-service to Astro.
