Companies plan to publish titles digitally with possibility of print publication via Kickstarter

North American manga publisher Digital Manga Inc. announced at Anime Expo on Thursday that it is teaming up with Tezuka Production to bring the entire library of Osamu Tezuka's manga to North American audiences. Digital Manga could not confirm any specific licenses at this time, but noted it is serving as the primary manga distributor for Tezuka's work. The company plans to release the titles primarily in digital format, but added there is a possibility of releasing titles in print via Kickstarter.

Digital Manga Inc. confirmed with ANN that for titles that have been published by other publishers in English, those titles will be excluded for print licenses by Digital Manga, but Digital Manga is in talks to release those series digitally.

Digital Manga has already published, or plans to publish Tezuka's Swallowing the Earth, Barbara, Triton of the Sea, Atomcat, and Unico manga through Kickstarter campaigns.

Although not stated explicitly, it's pretty safe to assume Astro Boy will come at some point since the entire Tezuka library is being released digitally by Digital Manga Inc.

I don't own digital manga myself, but it's pretty cool to see North America getting all of Tezuka's work digitally.

I guess Dark Horse didn't have exclusive rights to Astro Boy.
I hope that Digital Manga will do a better job with the Astro Boy releases, than Dark Horse, IE: larger format and right to left order instead of mirror imaging the art. Also there are still many items in the Astro Boy manga that have never been released in English (such as the rest of the 'return of Astro boy' story arc, only the first bit was included in DH)

I'll say this now; even if it's just digital manga scans, I might just look into this if it's the only chance I'll ever get to read the Rainbow Parakeet. (finally!)

 This will be wonderful if those titles that lent plots to the MIGHTY ATOM B& W series are among them. Was any timeline mentioned?

Doesn't look like there's any timeline at the moment. Hopefully things will happen fairly soon.

Oh, and here's a tweet showing the announcement from Anime Expo. Apparently it's worldwide and not just North America:

That's great as long as you can DOWNLOAD it!! My "Astroboy Magazine" 6 mo. subscription from Kickstarter turned out to be something I could only access when connected to the Internet. I would hope they are planning on providing a pdf of each volume.

Does anyone know if this is the case?

You could certainly just download all the files but i guess they wound't be a PDF anymore and you would have to rearange them yourself but that certanly is something i look at doing if that turns out to be the case :p well would just be better if you could download the PDF itself.

Wait... the entire Tezuka library? You must be kidding here, I never though this would be possible.

Wonder if they'll re-translate the chapters to make it more accurate? Either way, if this app doesn't turn out to be garbage like the Tezuka app I had, I'll definitely give it a shot.
