AI not quite as smart as 4 year old

This article states that there is a long way to go before we see AI having the IQ of an 8 year old; in fact, it lacks much common to 4 year old kids.

Top notch AI system about as smart as a four-year-old, lacks commonsense (GIZMAG)

Yet, the AI was not coupled to a humanoid robot; it had no senses of touch, taste, sight, etc. Children develop intelligence through interacting with their environments, but this AI has no such experiences. It relies entirely on a database for knowledge about the world.

Reminds me of the HARDAC episodes (Heart of Steel) from Batman the Animated series, an AI coupled in a complete sensation sterile environment beyond data. Took themes from Rossom's Universal Robots (RUR) and gave a chilling moral message.

Still it's a big step forward from Eliza and Alan Turing's theories, man I wish he was still alive. It's intriguing to see these advancements even for someone of my age born into the computer guided world. I am looking forward to seeing what science will give us.

As I recall, in THE COLOSSUS OF NY when Ross Martin's character died, they put his brain into the colossus' body, but it apparently had only sight and sound as senses. He went isane from the lack of sensations. I do not recall details about DONOVAN'S BRAIN, but I think it was similar.

Was Donovan's Brain the story that described scientists taking a human brain from birth and putting it in an environment in which they controlled every detail through data? Much like a precursor to the Matrix?

In that story if I remember the scientists one day decided to tell the person in their controlled world that everything they had experienced was essentially a lie, and then the person went absolutely insane with grief and rage and all things in-between.

No; it was about a mad scientist who removed the brain from a rich guy who was killed in an accident. The rest is vague, but somehow the scientist hoped to withdraw the $ from the man's bank account. I actually recall a version that went by some other title. Erich Von Stroheim played the mad doctor in this version.

Huh... I wonder what I'm thinking of then... I learned the story from one of my philosophy classes years ago.

Still it's an interesting concept!
