Horror-film master Tod Browning gathered an incredible cast of real-life sideshow freaks for this bizarre and fascinating film. Severely cut in U.S. during release and banned in the U.K. for 30 years, some reissue prints are missing brief epilogue; aka NATURE'S MISTAKES.

Classic melodrama with Chaney as the vengeful composer who lives in the catacombs under the Paris Opera House and kidnaps young Philbin as his singing protegee. Famous unmasking scene still packs a jolt, and the Bal Masque is especially impressive in two-color Technicolor. One of Chaney's finest hours. I am disappointed that WAR-GODS OF THE DEEP is absent, though it is far from one of VP's more memorable films, it goes nicely with MASTER OF THE WORLD.

Other than VP's films, one I want to highlight is CURSE OF THE DEMON, mainly because they basically remade it a few years ago, as Drag Me to Hell plot very much the same. I do not recall which one was better.

Andrews is a stuffily cynical psychologist who doesn't believe that series of deaths have been caused by ancient curse, but film convinces audience right off the bat and never lets up. Master of the world was made from the plot of two Verne books that aren't very well known, "Master of the world", and "Robur the Conqueror". I think the later is a sequel to the former. Another obscure Verne book, "Face the Flag" was the basis for "The Fabulous world of Jules Verne", a movie made in the late 50's and released in the US in the early '60s. I remember seeing that one as part of a double feature with "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea".

YES! They're playing Masque of the Red Death! :w00t:

They played Night of the Living Dead last night. I can't believe that after I watched for the first time I forgot the genius quote of "They're dead, they're all messed up." in all seriousness, that should be a T-shirt.

And The Devil's Bride is playing right now. I recall seeing it years ago during the Hammer Marathon. I think it's the film where Set (Sutekh, Seth) is brought up at the very ending.

I read both those Verne novels; they are available on one or both of the Gutenberg sites, one is .org, I do not recall the other one's suffix. Anyway, compare the scenes in 20,000 & Master, when Nemo leaves Ned on deck & begins to submerge; while Robur suspends Bronson & the other guy from the rope while the Albatross ["Albatross, Albatross, ALBATROSS!" "dO YA GET WAFERS WITH IT?"] LOSES ALTITUDE over a mountain.

EyeOdyssey: I have seen all those Hammer films they are showing today, though I think one of the others' title is unfamiliar to me. How can they omit the one with the cobra girl? I nearly died laughing when they 1st showed her face!

EDIT:
Fri 10/11:
11:00 PM 1381546800 horror
Dead of Night
103 min
TV-14 (1945)
Guests at a country estate share stories of the supernatural.

Dir: [Alberto] Cavalcanti Cast: Mervyn Johns , Roland Culver , Hartley Power .
103 min, TV-14 , CC CLOSE LEONARD MALTIN REVIEW: D: Cavalcanti, Basil Dearden, Robert Hamer, Charles Crichton. Mervyn Johns, Roland Culver, Antony Baird, Judy Kelly, Miles Malleson, Sally Ann Howes, Googie Withers, Ralph Michael, Michael Redgrave, Basil Radford, Naunton Wayne, Frederick Valk. Classic chiller of gathering at a country house, where guests trade supernatural stories. One of them (Johns) has been having a nightmare that now seems to be coming true; final sequence with Redgrave as a schizophrenic ventriloquist is a knockout. U.S. theatrical version ran 77m.; complete edition has been restored for TV.

REVIEW: close captioned

As I recall, this one had a short story that was used as the basis for The Twilight Zone's Twenty Two. "Room for one more, honey."

Cobra girl? I have to see that one (sounds very silly), what's the title of the film? Is the monster a Ray Harryhausen type stop motion special effect, or is it an animatronic? I assume it's the face of a human on the body of a cobra, in a way similar to the talking serpent from the 7 Faces of Dr. Lao?
