Latest Version of GIMP?

Postby Little Brown Fox » 11 years ago

Does anyone know how to download stuff on Linux? My current version of GIMP isn't up-to-date (apparently the Software Center couldn't be bothered to give me the correct one), and I can't seem to figure out how to get it through other means.

What is your distro based on? Debian (.deb packages) ? Red Hat (.rpm packages) ? Something else? In the first case you can just search at http://packages.debian.org , in the second case at http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM . It may just work, if your installation isn't too old. You can also try to compile it from sources, but unless you are experimented in the field you may run into troubles and easily spend a day or two (I can lend you a hand, but it will still be a long a painfull process if there are unusual troubles).

You need to install a ppa for the Gimp to allow apt-get to upgrade it. Try Googling for "latest gimp for ubuntu" to find the instructions. I already did this on my PC, I can find you the information later when I get home if you can't find it. It's real easy but has to be typed in on the command line.

Here is the link to the instructions. I think the method under " in the terminal " is the easiest way to do this.

Warning. You have to scroll to the end of the text in the boxes to see all of it! Better to copy and paste from the Web page to your terminal with ^C and ^V.

I'm actually much less concerned about that now than I was. My main grievance was my inability to get new brushes, but I was also vaguely concerned about not having the latest version. I've solved the brushes problem now (although I hope I didn't screw anything up in the process), and I while I may still have an interest in the latest versions at a later point in time, I'm not very concerned with the idea right now. Thanks, though. :) I now have the resources, should I get off of my exceedingly lazy arse to do something about it.
