Astro Boy on the cover of Animerica (1995)

Viz-published Animerica, the monthly Anime & Manga magazine was a huge part of Anime news in America in the 90s. For Vol. 3, No. 6, they did a special "Remembering Osamu Tezuka." And guess who they picked to represent his work on the cover!



The issue is a great tribute to his work. It includes an overview of his career, a timeline of his life, an essay from his widow, and short blurbs of people talking about him, including manga artists but also Billie Lou Watt, though she mostly talks about Kimba.




I bought this when I was super into Kimba the White Lion, so I was thrilled that he was in the header.




What article about Tezuka would be complete without mentioning his star system? I love Astro as part of a line of hand-holding little ones.

So yeah, Astro Boy was in Animerica.

kimba? My aunt loved kimba ever since she saw small. she has some vhs tapes of kimba where she found them at a... flea market? she never actually told me exactly where she got them from. All I know is that she really was into japanese cartoons back then.BTW, Is there a wiki about this issue?
