DARPA Robotics Challenge trials to be held December 20-21

The ATLAS robot features prominently in this competition, with several competitors using them:

But with a weight over 300 Lbs, & not even carrying its own power source, Atlas has a long way to go before becoming useful in rescue missions.

hopefully when it's completed it will help in rescue missions. Lately, A lot of storms destroyed homes and such around certain parts of the world. This could really help. Though, robots are mostly built in japan, I'm not sure if they will go anywhere else.

Though, as I see it, even a person trapped under rubble may be just a bit hesitant to accept help from something having Atlas' physical appearance. :D

Synthesized voice: "do not be afraid, I am here to help!"

On the other hand, it seems the Japanese are using cute little robots whose friendly faces and child like bodies may be more welcome by those trapped under rubble.

I can't help imagine a mean-looking robot saying it's here to help, and the trapped person saying in a very frightened way "I'm fine, I'll just enjoy being trapped under the rubbles" :p
The real sign that someone has become a fanatic is that he completely loses his sense of humor about some important facet of his life. When humor goes, it means he's lost his perspective.

Well, not particularly "mean-looking," just big & clunky, rather than little & cute.
