That plastic plate was a very odd choice but considering the time and what they were trying to pull off it makes sense. In the original comics it had been stated that Atom's hair was solid, not hair at all, so I think they were trying to make that very clear.

But yes, I do think that just with some styling it would have looked much more appealing.

As for casting for a new movie I think Atom could be played equally well by an older 'boyish' female (they did this for a lot of incarnations of Peter Pan) actor. It's easier to pull off a 'cute' 'shota' looking boy with someone who is female bodied and most people like the look better (and the voice they usually can pull off). The Japanese do this in SPADES on a regular basis.

Hey, sudden thought. Maybe a little girl who looks like a boy could play him pretty well too. On NHK there's a cute little girl named Sui-chan dressed in boy's clothes and seriously, if she ever gets a role in a Astro Boy Live Action film, I'M GONNA WATCH IT.

I wonder if they will make another live series one day. (They made a live series of black jack called young black jack in 2011. Wonder if they'll make another live astro boy series. Would be something to see.)

I thought that was a series. Yeah, I didn't see no pinoko at all. I think it was because it was him in his teen years. Pinoko wasn't around back then.

Man, but I can totally see a cute little girl dressed as pinoko in that series. (About 6,7 or 8 years old.) Hope I don't sound like a creeper here.
