and macs can get viruses.

and you need an anti malware program and a firewall as well as antivirus, no windows defender and windows firewall are not good enough, programs can add exceptions to windows firewall without you being asked so it is not useful at all

But they could in the future, no computer is genuinely 'virus-free' forever.

I think by getting Avast I'll be okay, my best friend has it and he hasn't had any problems with it.

All systems can get infected, it all depends on the softwares you run on it. If your Firefox get caught in a malicious script and starts acting funny, it WILL have access to your personal files whatever the system you are using, because the system doesn't know if Firefox wants to open a file on your behalf, or on a stranger's behalf. Some systems are more prone to give the "keys" to any application asking for them without thinking twice though (yes Windows, although holes tend to be closed with time). On such systems, the malicious application may try and succeed in infecting your system very deep, to the point of becoming completely stealthy and sometimes close to unremovable even when the system is reinstalled (rootkits installed as hypervisor). With more secure systems, an uninfected account will always see what's really going on (especially an administrative account).
