I just searched for your tablet and ubuntu, looks like the driver in the kernel dowsn't speek it's language in your version of kubuntu, you can easly upgrade to the latest version, just takes a while, mostley wating.

but just for the hellofit
sudo modprobe wacom
dmesg | tail.

and post the output here.

I was reading on ubuntu's forum about new drivers that support it if you want to try to compile the driver.

[ 9335.632311] usbcore: registered new interface driver wacom

Wouldn't I have to pay for a new version of the operating system? And wouldn't it erase absolutely everything I have on here, just like installing any new OS? I can't afford to do that; besides, I have this version backed up on a disc, in case things go wrong- it'd overwrite everything on here, too, but it's only for emergencies, and I don't expect to ever have to use it.

HOLD IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I triped over a ppa with undated drivers for wacom devices, it is worth a try.
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:maret/wacom
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade -y -q

leave off the -y -q if you want to answer questions during the update process

this will update the packages to the latest versions for your version of kubuntu available in your repositories.

like windows update on steroids, it updates everything not just the os.

windows yes
mscos yes
linux excluding fancy enterprise distros (your paying for support not the os) no
free as in free speech and free beer.
so no money needed, all versions of ubuntu and derivatives like kubuntu are always free.

when you run the pen across the tablet does the mouse courser move???????

I have my sisters old laptop running the same version of kubuntu as you have, I am looking into whether you can install backported drivers from 13.10 (the version I am using), you may have to wate till 14.04 comes out later this month, I think 14.04 is the next lts so you should get a notification of a new version and given the option to upgrade in place, the driver support for your tablet is relatively new so it will be landing in the distros fairly soon.

and put your wallet away you don't have to pay for any of it.

Will it overwrite everything, though? I'd very much like to keep my things, thank you very much, and I've nothing to safely and reliably back it up on.

(Check your boards for Bullet Bem, btw.)

it will not screw up your settings and data at all, it will update all the software on your system to the latest versions available, this is pretty much .not going to brake anything and if the ppa causes problems it can be purged and the package manager will revert to the packages in the main repos, this should not be a problem though, your data is safe, the worst you will see is maybe a newer version of some program is laid our a bit different or something, but nothing to be concerned about, you should be installing updates anyway to keep things stable and safe.

and what is this (Check your boards for Bullet Bem, btw.)

you don't need to fear, I am not gonna tell you to do something that can brake your box without telling you about the risks in advance.

I was talking about your message board, hon. ^ ^;

Okay then, my mom said something along those lines... So, how do I do it? Update the thing, I mean? Is it possible to do it from the terminal? (I don't really know the ins and outs of that thing, but I sure do love watching it work...)

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SaucyUpgrades/Kubuntu

there talking about 13.04 to 13.10 but the prosedure is exactley the same for 12.04 to 12.10 to 13.04 to 13.10 then your running the latest.

it will make you upgrade one step at a time

alternatively you can wait till April 17 and go strait to 14.04, it will let you go directly to that one because 12.04 and 14.04 are both lts (long term support) releases.

sense it is going to come out so soon I would just wate for the lts to come out, then you only have to upgrade once rather then 3 times and once more in 2 weeks.
