The second boxet of the 1963 series just arrived in the post. Admittedly it's been available here in Australia for several months, but I haven't been able to afford it. I expect the Region 1 release to be very similar.
It's released by Madman, it's a Region 4 DVD release and comes in a metal box with 11 slimline DVD cases. My order was placed with Madman, so the metal box came encased in a thick cardboard box with a label about removing the container for retail display. I also got a very large promotional poster which I suppose is for shop windows. It has the Astroboy B&W DVD release on the front, and Appleseed 2004 on the back. It's pretty cool.
The discs are number 11-20 (episodes 53-104), plus an extras disc. The music for the DVD menu on the extras disc is some kind of old fashioned jazz version of the Astroboy theme. I haven't heard it before.
The disc case and DVD menu lists the extras as:
1. Original Japanese Episodes
2. Deleted Scenes
3. Interview with Fred Ladd
4. Fred Ladd Tour Gallery
5. Original Character Art Gallery
6. Merchandise Gallery
7. Behind the Scenes at Mushi Studios
The original Japanese episodes are:
#34 The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (with Japanese commentary only)
#56 The Moon Monsters (Colour Episode)
#193 The Greatest Adventure on Earth (Final Episode to Air in Japan)
Episode 34 begins with 4 pages of history (this was the episode that had all the big name animators and Tezuka didn't like it, then the film went missing). It has a single audio track, which is the original Japanese with the animators talking over the top in Japanese. It also had a subtitle track in English of what the animators are saying.
Episode 56 has one page of history. The episode is indeed in full colour, and it looks beautiful. Not only because it's such a difference after the rest of the DVD being B&W, but it's really sharp and clear. It has dual Japanese and English audio tracks, and optional English subtitles.
Epsidoe 193 has one page of history. The opening sequence is quite different, I suppose it was changed some way into the series. It's in Japanese only with optional English subtitles.
There are tons of deleted scenes. Each one has a before and after:
#1 The Birth of Astroboy
#2 Colosso
#4 The Sphinx
#6 Grass Boy
#10 The Spirit Machine (2 scenes)
#18 Time Machine
#22 Sea Serpent Isle
#26 Don Tay's Infernal Machine (2 scenes)
#28 The Wacky Machine
#53 Dogma Palace (4 scenes)
#57 The Viking King
#58 The Devil Doll (2 scenes)
#69 Funnel to the Future
#70 Super Brain (2 scenes)
#71 A Mighty Minute
#76 The Mad Beltway
#81 Mystery of Amless Dam (2 scenes)
#85 Angel of the Alps (2 scenes)
#86 Magic Punch Card (2 scenes)
#88 Contest in Space (2 scenes)
#92 Uncharted World
#98 Super Human Beings
There are also the original Japanese openings for the following episodes:
#65 Mission to the Middle of the World
#80 Horrible King Horrid
The Interview with Fred Ladd continues on from part 1 in the first boxset.
The Fred Ladd Australian Tour Gallery contains a few good photos of his visit here with Madman. The Original Character Art Gallery doesn't have much, but they're good and not on any other DVDs. The Merchandise Gallery is also brief.
Behind the Scenes at Mushi is in Japanese with English subs. It's old B&W footage and is very cool. It goes for about seven and a half minutes.

I wonder if the Behind the Scenes at Mushi was lifted from #53? Here is the synposis & a few of my notes:
53rd Episode: Goodbye 1963 (thread w/pics)
It is New Year's Eve, 1963. Uran finds a picture while cleaning the house. With the picture as a clue, Astro Boy and Dr. Ochanomizu begin to piece together the past. This episode is a special edition that includes an introduction of "The making of the film of Astro Boy."

A few more details about #53:
clips from adv on Mars
Robotland (w/ behind the scenes also)
& Electro (Lightning Man)
It showed voice actress for Atom. I remember seeing Chitan's voice actress in an extra somewhere, but not here.
