In the 60's series Tenma is made to look quite crazy indeed. The method in which he gets rid of Astro is probably the cruelest of any of the version... he raises Astro as his own son for months (I think they even said years), before selling him off to the circus right in front of him. The comic is pretty much exactly the same... in the extended (and bizzare) version of astro's birth in (i think) issue 8 or 9, Tenma was drunk the night he finally got fed up & sold Astro off. Tenma appears a few times in the comic, never for long, sometimes in disguise, but pretty much always to help out Astro in one way or another.
In the 80's series Astro embarasses Tenma at a fancy dinner on a cruise ship. Tenma yells at Astro & says some very mean things to him & Astro leaves. Astro is found by HamEgg, the ringmaster, who convinces Astro to join the circus & tricks Astro into signing over ownership to him. Tenma changes his mind almost immediately & starts seaching the ship for Astro & yelling that he's sorry, but it's too late, as HamEgg has locked him in a suitcase & drained his energy. We never see Tenma again in the 80's series.

I do agree... In the 60's series it's a different kind of crazy than in the 2003 series, though. At least in the 60's series the assistance isn't completely for his own personal gain. Example in case someone doesn't get it: Dr.Tenma shows Astro how to use his arm cannon, but that was so he could be powerful enough to use in Tenma's plans for him as the king of robots.

I think that sums it up perfectly.

In the 80s series I would say that Tenma wasn't really depicted as evil. The worst he did was to embezzel from the Ministry of Science. He yelled at Toby, but all dads yell at their kids when they're frustrated. I think it was worse in that case because Tenma was so prestigious and got so badly embarrassed at the fancy dinner in front of rich people.
I always wondered what happened to him after that. He never turned up again, but surely he would have heard about Astroboy.

My version had an answer to that one!

(Not that it changed anything for me, because I never got to see that episode until 1999, lol!

Tobio's mom Hoshie Tenma was not even mentioned in any but the Chronicles of Astroboy (Manga vols 6-8). I assume she had died rather than divorced, becuase (In the USA) mothers usually get custody. However, that may be untrue in Japan. :d evil:

Did the Tenmas had other children? Because maybe most fathers got custody of children robots!
