[b]Astro appears to have been driving. I just took a look at it and there is definately only one person in the car. The form is kind of vague, but the profile silhouette could pass as Astro. I don't know if this means he's learnt to drive since his days as the human Toby, or if he crashed it again because he still hasn't learnt to drive!

I will take another look, but I am certain there was an adult in the front seat, and a child in the back. I could only see silhouttes, though.[/b]

You might have been looking at the seat itself. The scenes were bretty brief, I think they did it deliberately so we wouldn't know Astro was in the car until after the accident.

I have found a scene in Astroboy where the storage bracket thing in his chest is used. It was in A Robot President, when Astro was on the robot dump in Deadcross's castle and Daddy Walrus had to fix him.

First he opens Astro's chest, and on the right we can see the cyclometer socket and the bracket below.


Notice there is a nozzle in the cyclometer socket:


It's a retractable cord, and Daddy Walrus pulls it out.


He attaches it to his phone watch, which has a spare energy unit built in.


He then puts the watch in the compartment and closes Astro's chest.


So it seems that from then on, Astro is drawing his energy from the watch which he is plugged in to.

I had a thought on the use of energy cassettes. In Uran's Twin, Uran is playing outside with jump one morning and Father tells her she has to go to art class. He says "now put your energy casette in and get going."

It sounds like she was running on some kind of secondary energy source, but they may have just used fresh energy casettes each morning to get them through the day. Also, I have no life.

Ok, the word 'cyclometer' itself had little meaning until you reminded me of its purpose: a tracking device.

After looking more closely, I see that Atom is indeed the driver. As far as that goes, he drove the family to vacation home in the 30th Aniversary #5 "A Wonderful Christmas", drove the detective disguised as Dr. Elefun, in the "Man-made Solar Sphere" and on an unrelated subject, lied to Shib's (Alvin's) mama in manga #9, page 138 :wahah:
