Good to have you here Dennis_Ian, you can be part of our small psychotically obsessed Astroboy group. :D

If the new semester had not just started, I would capture a few frames of this scene, but I cannot afford to distract myself at this time.

I wouldn't look at them anyway, I'm trying to avoid spoiling the experience for myself!

Is it just me, or does that bold red text on medium blue background seem blurry or glowing?

No, it's everyone. I think mostly due to the optical illusion caused by the wide difference between photic wavelengths of red and blue (look how far apart they are in a rainbow). You get the same effect looking at high-contrast striping of red and green in printing - it appears to shimmer.

Bad for the eyes!!!

It may also be to do with how the light gun in computer screens display colour, like how well it aligns R, G and B. When you look closely, does it appear the red text has a fine black shadow? Mine does, but I don't know if that's an peculiarity of the computer screen or the aforementioned optical illusion.

Actually I think it's the computer screen. When it's near the top of my screen it looks a little blurry. When it's near the bottom it's sharper but has a black shadow.

My screen res is 1600x1200 on a 17" CRT monitor.

just curious, how does Astroboy steer while in flight? (i hope this isn't really old news...haha) :)

i know visually this doesn't really look strange, but theoretically, i'm really wondering how he does it. it's not like he has rudders running along his arms and back to easily steer like planes and jets do. i'm guessing he has these or 'fin-like' things on his feet internally, functioning like rudders when his feet converts to 'jet' mode. obviously, with his strength, it only takes a little body language to adjust to the balance necessary to fly.

He seems to use his body to steer. By leaning one way, usually from the waist, he seems to turn. He could also use thrust vectoring, moving his feet to whatever position pushes him in the right direction. Watch the new series episode one and three. In 1, he learns to fly, but he has quite a time going in the direction of choice. Episode three, he learns to fly in the vacuum of space and the microgravity of a small planet. :D By the Way, he should not be able to fly horizontally, because he has no source (wings) of lift. :D

You think that's weird. Remember the scene from Secret Of Bee City where Astro uses his jets to blast the bees away?

Even as a kid I thought there was something wrong with that.

Adherence to the laws of physics would take all the fun out of these shows. :D
They do not even try. I remember an episode of the newer Batman series that airs 1:30 am Sunday mornings on the Cartoon Network. Batman was wrestling with the villian as they were on the villian's flying machine, headed straight toward a canyon wall, at a high speed. At the last moment, both leap and plunge directly downward, somehow freeing themselves from the forward momentum.

As regards the picture you posted, if Atom spun quickly enough, he would indeed wobble, but would not propel himself away. However, he would surely need new shorts from spinning while sitting on the ground, and maybe even a new coat of black pant for his backside. If, he opened fire with his fanny/hienie/cheek/rump/tail mounted machine guns, pointed directly downward, and maybe such as to also help counteract both the vertical and horizontal components of his jets' thrust, he might only need some patches on his shorts where the gun barrels stuck out. :D I do not know how Uran would fare against any richochetting bullets, though. :wahah:

In this the 80s remake, the boots are circus performer's boots. The performer Cathy gave him these as a gift in "The Robot Circus" episode. For plan old boots, they certainly hold up very well, though. :D In the manga, the B&W anime, and the new series, the boots are simply part of Atom's body. They are molded onto him, as is his brief/bathing suit, although this item is molded or painted on in all versions.

Ah, the eternal question!

"There are four things that are too amazing for me,
five that I do not understand:
The way of an eagle in the sky,
The way of a snake on a rock,
The way of a ship on the high seas,
The way of a man with a maiden,
The way of Astro's boots."

- Proverbs 30:18-19 (New Heretics Translation)
