As far as the classic shaped heart goes, I suppose the simplest answer is yes, he does have a heart. However, it is not visible within his chest in the 80s series, because too much stuff is in the way. In the other three versions (Manga, B&W and current series, it is almost always visible when his chest is open. However, I believe I have even seen some 60s frames in which it is not where it ought to be.

Besides his heart, (60s B&W) his chest contains a refuelling hose (used only to share his energy with others), a geiger counter, and a stethiscope.

In the other respect, metaphysical, he has a heart in the sense that he can emphathize with others who are sad or in trouble. Because of this, violence is only a last resort for him. In the current series, he is shown attempting to reason with the antagonists, all the while dodging their attacks.

good point...they they cant call astroboy "a robot with a heart" if he cant relate to a real human.

Does anyone know if he can still tell the difference between good and evil? In the manga and I think the 60s series he could, but not in the 80s series. It was one of his 7 special powers.

Good question! I have seen though episode 24, and could not infer this power from his actions.

Referring to the pictures on this thread, Astroboy timeline,
the manga pic

clearly shows him frowning at the villain while lightning flashes between the two. This is clearly the power in question.

However, looking to the diagram,


7 powers of Atom does expand on this and make clear that it is his heart, and unfortunately, the explanation is a graphic, so Bablefish has no translation. However, clicking the pic yields a page that bablefish does translate "Good and evil of the human you distinguish" However, I suspect that this whole thing refers to the classic Atom, because it does have the twin machine guns. The character page also has a diagram, and it has no line pointing to Atom's bottom/rear end, but has two pointing toward his chest. However, it has far too many pieces to try reproducing it here.
