anime top 10 AND ANIME MOVIES TOP 10
Here's mine (tough choices since I like so many nearly equally) in no particular order:
Series (excluding Astro since you already know I like it):
Excel Saga
Digi Charat
Serial Experements Lain
Saber Marionette J
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku
Gunsmith Cats
Ebichu
Cowboy Bebop
Hellsing
Read Or Die
Movies:
Ghost In The Shell
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
On Your Mark
Spriggan
Dominion Tank Police
Robot Carnival
Nekojiru-Sou
Black Magic M66
Vampire Hunter D
Gall Force
I'd be happy to list some other good ones if anyone's interested since 10 for each category is very limiting.
BTW, for an otaku, you seem not to have seen many anime... you should maybe try harder unless you make up for it with video games or body odour

I am not going to post a top 10 as that is just way too hard.
I would like to comment on a few shows mentioned already tho.. I hope thats ok.
Naussiccaa In the Valley of The Wind was a fantastic movie. I used to rent that and another (american-style) animated morie out of a little corner video store all the time. I have been trying to track both those movies down for purchase for over 10 years now. The other Movie was STARCHASER the Legend of Orin.
Spirited Away is also a fantastic movie. This was the first Anime movie I ever bought on DVD. I managed to snag one of those limited collectors edition ones. My collection of Anime is still very small on both DVD and VHS as to be honest it is just way too expensive and difficult to get here in Australia, or at least where I live in Australia.
I would also like to mention here that both Star Blazers (the version of Yamato that was released here in Australia) is actually a legal downloadable series now, as is Mysterious Cities of Gold. Apparently it has something to to with the copyright for these two show being killed due to no one owns them anymore or something like that. Its legal mumbo jumbo, so I do not understand how it works. If you type them into Google tho you will find PLENTY of hits for where to freely and openly and legally download them.
three and a half years.. for what?
I bought a copy of Gunsmith Cats because I read about its story and extras. Too bad I was suckered into a bootleg that had no extras. The story itself was worthwhile, but I prefer funny titles:
I will post my favorite movies later.
- 1. Colorful: my number one pick, it is rather risque, being about losers trying to sneak a peek at girls' panties, but it is absolutely the funniest thing I have ever seen, because of the consequnces and strained facial expressions as they try to stretch for the peek.
I could not order the following in terms of funniest to least funny. - 2. Fist of the North Star. extremely violent, but unbelievably b-movie-style of killing, I could not stop laughing, it was just too dumb.
- 3. Mahoromatic. Funny and also fan service. Sexual fantasies are rather graphic, though.
- 4. Nuku Nuku (OAV, not Dash) funny
- 5. Tetsuwan Atumu (new (Japanese Language),old, older, manga) funny because kids are so cute.
- 6. Excel Saga. However, I must learn more about Japanese culture to undrestand Excel's puns.
- 7. Martian Successor Nadesico/ and its spinoff, Gekiganger 3. The crew of the Nedesico enjoy watching the old anime, Gekiganger 3, and hence the spinoff.
Quite funny! I will need to see if I should move this higher in the list, because it is quite funny.
- 8. Photon is also quite funny, but does have some rather offensive sexual content, even though that particular part of the body is hidden behind a censor's black dot, I found the one scene rather gross.
- 9. Dirty Pair/ Burn Up/ Plastic Little/ and others with goofy slapstick-style humor, massive destruction, and fan-service.
- 10. Wild Arms. It has the cutest little vampire I have ever seen!
I will post my favorite movies later.
I saw Hellsing on somebody's list. I watched this on the Action Channel, but missed a week, so I rented a disk. I actually liked the dubbed version better, I think the Brit accents made the difference.
Speaking of Hellsing, I just received the first graphic novel. It goes from right to left, except for the text itself.

Amazon.com: Hellsing GN #1

Just a few questions and comments about what has been mentioned so far people..
Gunsmith Cats
- I saw this series (all three eps) when they showed it on SBS (foreign language channel here in Australia for you who arent from here) and really enjoyed it. I have heard some pretty positive things about the DVD packaging of this too. Of course the Manga this was based on does not really sound like my sort of thing (not into the whole Japaneese concept of pairing old men with little girls) but the Anime was quite good.
Colorful:
This sort of Anime is something I cant get enough of. The 'unconventional' manner in wich Japan can take subjects like this and make them both tragic and pathetic yet hilariously funny always gets me. I have never even heard of this series so I assume it is not available here in Oz. Pity.
Fist of the North Star.
This is one of the few Anime I have seen that I could't actually find something in there I liked. Not the WORST Anime I have seen as it wasnt 'bad' but I found it amazingly bland and uninteresting.
Mahoromatic, Photon, Nuku Nuku
Heve not heard of these titles. Offer more background or should I just google them?
Excel Saga, Martian Successor Nadesico/ and its spinoff, Gekiganger 3, Dirty Pair/ Burn Up/ Plastic Little
I have wanted to see these for the longest time, but I can't buy them on my pension and no video stores around here ever get Anime.
Wild Arms.
Is this related to teh Game Series of the same name? I found a game here called Wild Arms 3 and it looked like Final Fantazy in the American West. Very intreaguing but @ $100 it was unafordable for me.
----
Could someone explain to me exactly what 'FAN SERVICE" is? I never have understood the term, but have never actually bothered asking till now.
Sexual Fantasies when done 'right' in Japaneese media of any sort is brilliant. I would rather watch say erotic Ghost Story than Fatal attraction so to speak. However, Japan doesnt seem to have the same 'moral bariers' in their society that we have here. I am not 'accusing' them of being immoral as obviously the definition of that alters from culture to culture. But as I am Australian some of the 'sexual issues' that arise on the more mature Japan media (Gunsmith Cats for eg) that are portrayed as 'common' just kinda give me the willies.

I've always thought it meant references for the audience. For example, in one episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Raphael says "What do you think this is? A cartoon?". The Simpsons is full of it, especially in reference to what US state Springfield is in.
I read somewhere that in anime, fan service is sexually tilted. ie. a brief shot up someone's skirt. I don't think fan service is strictly limited to this.
In any case, it's part of the show that's done consciously for the audience rather that necessary for the plot, character development, etc.
The placement of hyotantsugi (the funny pig creature) in Astroboy is an example of fan service. It's just there to serve the fans.

I don't remember anything creepy in Gunsmith Cats, but there's definately some anime where I think the females are portrayed as a little too young for their circumstances. I read a funny web article on anime that claimed the age of consent in Japan is foetus. (well it was funny in context)
Alright, getting to my top 10 favourite Anime series/OAVs:
1. Astroboy (of course)
2. Ninja Scroll (the TV series, exceptionally good)
3. Neon Genesis Evangelion (a classic, forcably underrated over time)
4. 3x3 Eyes (love the plot devices and characters)
5. Goku Midnight Eye (sooooo cool)
6. Dragonball Z (I quite like it, pity it seems to attract a lot of young arrogant dickheads)
7. Zoids (great story once you get into it)
8. Star Blazers (a classic)
OMG that's sad! I haven't seen much, and I can't bring myself to put the likes of Crush Gear on the list.

Top 10 favourite Anime movies:
1. Ninja Scroll (all round excellent)
2. Spirited Away (amazing, a very close second)
3. Akira (breathtaking)
4. Final Fantasy (forgot it was animated while watching)
5. Ghost in the Shell (a classic)
6. Castle of Cagliostro (very entertaining)
7. The Wings of Honeomaise (amazing quality animation)
8. Perfect Blue (gripping)
9. Animatrix (some bits great, some average)
10. Spriggan (good action, story lacks a bit)
I honestly haven't seen much else. Patlabour 2, Black Jack and another one which I can't remember.
Anime on my list to see are:
Grave of the Fireflies (apparently the saddest ending of all time)
Fist of the North Star (with alcohol and pizza, preferably)
Princess Mononoke (I've wanted to see this for the longest time)
Excel Saga (as soon as I can be bothered making the long drive to the only place I know that has it)
I wouldn't mind seeing Serial Experiments Lain and ..hack//sign (sp?) at some point, as I've heard these are favourites amongst a few people.
Now I'll probably think of 10 more after clicking Add Reply.
