Yes I was eventually able to access the extras using PowerDVD, cant remember exactly how I did it though and I really don't understand why people keep saying that that set is not legit.

Wow! Thanks GIR, I couldn't access the extras on my DVDs. I'll have a go with PowerDVD.

But I know I have not seen these before.

This is the genie and the fisherman from the story at the start of The Genie From Outer Space.

Image
This guy seems familiar, but I cannot place him in an ep.

Argh! This guy is so familiar but I can't place him either. I'll have to think about it.

Image
I cannot identify either of these, but only the girl seems unique.

This is Detective Rock and Princess Saphira from The Time Machine.

I think this is Dr. Winston, PI Randolf Holmes' assistant. He appears at the beginning and at the end of the 80's ep 'The Man-Made Solar Sphere'.

The Pirate Anime FAQ
The Pirate Anime FAQ: DVD
While not an official site, does have sensible arguments.

The region zero combined with the Chinese and English subtitles plus the unreasonably low price make it all too clear.

All of those arguments are totally illogical, but I guess everyone is free to think whatever they like, it doesn't necessarily mean that it is factual.

All of those arguments are totally illogical

Please show us why these are illogical. It is just too easy to make that statement, and because it lacks any evidence, by the rules of logic, one may disreagard it. The statement you attempt to refute did cite evidence. Its being an affirative statement, requred such. Your stating that everyone is entitled to an opinion weakens the your first statement, because if you had been able to cite evidence, the opinion statement would be beside the point.

There are several characteristics in which legitimate DVDs differ from pirated DVDs. Region zero is not necessarily indicitive of piracy by itself. However, if you look at that FAQ page, it lists Chinese/English subtitles, unreasonably low prices, lack of serial number, email addresses that use other than company's domain name, and a few others. Moreover, it explains why each of these charateristics should raise suspicions about piracy. I noted that the FX release had three of those characteristics, but failed to note others that are also present because I felt that I had made my case with three.

Here is animeondvd.com's listing of licensed titles and the lincense holders For region 1

If you need to salve your conscious for owning pirated DVDs, note that on the main page of licensing stuff the site author indicates that fansubs and such for regions that lack official releases of those titles infringe only on the rights of Japanese companies, and if they did not like that, they should license releases in those regions.

There is an 80s Astroboy DVD out but it is not in English- its in Chinese! That's not fair! They should make a DVD of the English version. Are you sure this is not available anywhere?

I got my 80's DVD's from ebay, I think the seller was nekoDVD. It's in japanese with english/chinese subs.
I'm pretty sure there are no DVD's with english dubs around yet :( .

My opinion though it may be, I base it upon several pieces of evidence that I named one by one. Your opinion on the other hand, is based upon no evidence.

Let us just agree to disagree on this topic.

Anyway, in case you are intersted, these links to threads that discussed this topic some time ago:

80s episode on DVD?, will it ever come out?
New series now on DVD!!!!!!!!!!, Yes, first disc now available! (page 2)

You say you use POWER DVD and are able to access the extras? I will try it again.
