Comics (plural) ends with a c and s. The c becomes ku and the s becomes su. If it was comic (singular), it would be komikku. And pretend that double k isn't there, it's just written like that to make it sound more like COM-ic rather than co-MIC.
Oh yeah, and they throw in extra sylables to get these foreign words to work. So yes, komikkusu isn't prounounced the same as comics. After all, we don't say comicoosoo.
It helps to put on a dodgy ninja or samurai accent to get it sounding right. (I hope it's okay to say that!

By the way, it used to freak me out that the Japanese have Hiragana and Katakana. Two 48-symbol alphabets that sound exactly the same but have different symbols. Weird.

I haven't researched if Uran is Uranium in Japanese but if it is then the shortening can be explained by the fact Uran is a borrowed word.
My statement is based upon Bablefish's translation of her name as "the uranium" just as her brother's name is translated "the atom".
Think about that radioactive element, after which Atomu's kid sister is named: Uranium. I myself thought 'Uran' was a strange name, & cannot understand why the Japanese version of Uranium is actually shorter than the Engrish [sic] word. I have been studying Japanese, and have noted its tendency to add vowels to non-Japanese words.
The added vowels refers to the English speaker's perspective.

Seriously, english is all kinds of messed up. I sure as hell wouldn't want to try learning it if I didnt speak it 'originally'. It is no where near as 'logical' as other languages such as Francais or to a lesser (but still practical as an example) Deutch.
The only second language I am close to fluent on is leet, but as that is based STRONGLY on english its really easy, so it doesnt count. Even if Websters says it does.

While reading about language acquistion in the human brain, I read that Italian has a phonetic spelling. I am so jealous. If English speakers wanted to adopt non-English words, why did they also adopt non-English spelling? There is a hot controversy about whole-word vs. phonetic teaching methods of reading. With all these French decorative words in our language, all the Chinese, and other languages that have non-English phenomes, why translate as they did? Half the people I know pronounce 'Xavier' as 'Ex-avier', including all the X-men (not that I know them personally). The French 'word' "hors de uvres(not sure of spelling)" Three words, 4 syllables, but the pronounciation is "Or durves" 2 syllables!

"koosoo" doesn't mean plural, it's just that they can't pronounce the "-cs" sound and the end of "comics". The only consonant sound they have that isn't followed by a vowel sound is "n". So to pronounce the "-cs" sound, they put the letter u after each letter. Thus, "-cusu" (pronounced "coosoo", written as "kusu").
