Thus we have a lose-lose situation,

Yeah, that's it exactly.

Prior to Astroboy, any robot faced with such a decision would malfunction. It's voice would slow down, sparks would fly, then it would explode. At least, this is what I am led to believe from Star Trek. Then they invented exception error handling. :D (Just kidding there.)

That's exactly the point in Asimov universe: in such case, robots simply break down with too much tensions in their positronic brain. Hope Astro has this exception handling, or I might be responsible for his destruction  ...and I could become the most hated person on this forum

Cybo does not have that problem. Cybo could kill you and let the other live. All in defense of it's evironmental containment. Or home. Astro is in school... You attack the school, Astro fights against you. You could get hurt, or killed. Astro will run and play and laugh afterwards and not bring it to mind even though the incident is stored in memory for recall and analysis.
So that the most economic means of stopping, averting, or destroying the enemy can be utilized. If verbal communication indoctrination, education fails, Astro will employ firepower. :)

I know I ought to leave well-enough alone, but I am just now reading Ghost in the Shell I, and the subject of implanted memories is present. Basically, the bad guy was using this trash collector as his pawn, having implanted false memories in him to help build his cover (95). The poor guy freaked out. He could not believe that his wife and kid were figments of his imagination.

"Whether its a simex or a dream, the information that exists is all real... and an illusion at the same time" (96). This puts it rather bluntly. To the one in whom the implanted 'memories' reside, they seem like real memories of real events. He has no way of discerning implanted memories from real ones. Nevertheless, the life he believed he lived was not his own.

I have just started reading "Searching for Memory" by Daniel Schacter. It says that memories can be falsified by manipulative 'therapists' who seek to find 'momories' of abuse by parents, and lead the subjects who must be open to suggestion to 'recover' these so-called 'repressed' memories. These same people, having been convinced of the incidents, are reluctant to release belief in these fabricated events. The emotions that the 'therapist' evokes in the session, is key to the seeming validity of these fake memories.

I will add more as I learn more.

I remember very well that part. I was litterally stroked by the scene. It was something like that:
- We checked your appartment, it looks like it belongs to someone who is not married.
- I told you I have divorced recently.
- The janitor has told us you live here alone since more than 10 years.
- But I remember all that!
- Do you remember last time you have had a good time with your wife? with your child? Do you remember the last time you ate a steak? How did it taste? <going on with plenty of examples>
- ... <man looks desperately lost>

Or maybe was all that scene implanted into my memory? :P

After reading a bit from that Sutra, I was reminded of a wiseman's wisdom:

Cybotron, you are a true believer, I mean that in a psychological sense. That is, you cannot scrutinize the object of your belief: Astroboy. You might consider starting your own cult. If you think nobody would worship a little robot-boy, you might be surprised at how desperate people are for a object of faith. :D

BTW, here is a page listing the scripts or transcripts of the Monty Python skatches.

HEY! I MADE THAT!
